Web design agencies in Johannesburg are easy to find. The hard part is picking one.
Business here spreads across Sandton, Rosebank, Randburg, Midrand, and the CBD. Each area has its own studios chasing the same clients. Some serve all of South Africa, and others stay close to one suburb.
Directories don’t help much. They list dozens of firms, and most profiles read alike. That leaves you with names but no clear way to tell them apart.
Pick wrong and you pay twice, once to build the site and once to fix it.
So I built a scoring method and applied it to 45 agencies. The data came from Clutch, DesignRush, G2, Glassdoor, Indeed, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, SEMrush, and Trustpilot. Every agency got the same test.
Now you can compare real differences, not polished pitches. Below, you’ll find the ranking, full reviews, and a plain guide to choosing well.

1. Vaimo — For Retail and Fashion Brands Selling at Scale

- Website: vaimo.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $100,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.45 (14 reviews)
- Team Size: 447 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 18
- Monthly Website Visits: 13,536
- Employee Review Score: 3.85 (138 reviews)
Overview
Vaimo builds online stores for brands that sell a lot. Its client list leans toward retail and fashion, with a home-improvement chain among them. That mix tells you what it handles well: big catalogs, live stock, and checkout at volume.
It got there slowly. Vaimo started as a tiny start-up and grew organically, first as a Magento specialist. The name comes from a Sami word for heart.
Those Magento roots still show, but the toolkit has widened. Its partner listings now include Adobe Commerce, commercetools, and Contentful.
Its staff also speak at Magento events. I read that as a sign of a team that keeps learning, not one that only sells.
Its staff speak at Magento events, which suggests a team that keeps learning
Core Services
- Ecommerce UX and web design for online stores
- Commerce platform builds on Adobe Commerce (Magento) and other stacks
- Content management, product information (PIM), and system integrations
- Managed services, including support, security, and cloud hosting
- Digital strategy, analytics, and conversion optimization
Why They Rank #1
- No other agency here draws more visitors, which points to the widest market reach on this list.
- With the largest team here by a wide margin, it can run several big builds at once.
- Employee reviews outnumber every other agency on the list, so the staff rating is well tested.
- Clients score its value for money below nearly every rated agency here, which fits a premium price.
- Entry is priced for large budgets. No agency here asks for more upfront.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Clutch holds only a few Vaimo reviews, mostly from retail and building-materials clients, and most are years old. They credit sharp design, flexible people, and strong sales gains. The recurring gripe is thin updates on development tasks, and one client scored value lower than the rest.
Our Take
Pick Vaimo if you sell products at scale and want a commerce platform built around them. If you only need a straightforward site to bring in local enquiries, look further down this list.
2. CreativeWeb — Best if You Want a Bespoke Site Built Around Search

- Website: cbwebsitedesign.co.uk
- Minimum Project Cost: $10,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.63 (114 reviews)
- Team Size: 18 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 13
- Monthly Website Visits: 11,166
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
CreativeWeb has a habit of going deep on a few sectors. Its site has dedicated pages for aviation, golf and leisure, charity, and travel.
Behind that sits a founder who came up through development and SEO, Christopher Baker. You can see the influence in how the studio treats search as part of the build.
The house rule is bespoke work. The team says it doesn’t use templates, so each site starts from a blank page.
It also lets you test its thinking before you sign anything. An SEO checker and a cost estimator sit on the site for anyone to try.
Lately it has added services aimed at AI-driven search, under the label GEO. I read that as a team already thinking about visibility from day one.
If you want a polished, conversion-minded site and can pay agency rates, it deserves a call. If your budget is tight, the hourly rate may sting.
Core Services
- Bespoke website design and development
- SEO and digital marketing
- GEO (generative engine optimization) services
- Hosting and website support
- Branding, ecommerce, and website audits
Why They Rank #2
- Web design is the core of what it sells, second-highest focus on the list.
- More reviews back its client score than any other agency here, so it isn’t a small-sample fluke.
- Only the top-ranked agency draws more visitors, which is real reach for a much smaller team.
- Clients rate value for money highly, even with an hourly rate above what most agencies here charge.
- Capacity is the gap: a team this size can’t match the top spot’s volume of large builds.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
In the Clutch reviews I read, clients say the team treats each site as its own. One client calls a near-decade partnership proof of reliability. Staff come across as knowledgeable and courteous. I found no repeated complaint.
Our Take
Call CreativeWeb if you want a bespoke site built around search and can afford agency rates. If you need a quick template site on a tight budget, look further down this list.
3. Bluegrass Digital — For Sites That Live Inside Bigger Systems

- Website: bluegrassdigital.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $10,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.35 (45 reviews)
- Team Size: 54 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 30
- Monthly Website Visits: 134
- Employee Review Score: 4.70 (11 reviews)
Overview
Bluegrass works with big, careful sectors: energy, finance, pharma, professional services, and retail.
One platform ties them together. It committed to the Umbraco CMS years ago and now holds Gold Partner status.
It has even built its own add-on for the platform, called UmbracoEngage, aimed at turning visits into leads.
The team also moves quickly on new tooling. When Umbraco released a developer tool for AI-assisted work, Bluegrass explained what it means for clients.
I’d call it a software house that also designs websites. If you want a simple brochure site, look elsewhere. If your site is part of a bigger system, it fits.
Core Services
- Umbraco website design and development
- UX and UI design
- Custom web applications
- Mobile app development
- DevOps and managed services with service level agreements
Why They Rank #3
- Nobody on this list has been at it longer, which usually means steadier delivery on long engagements.
- Web design is a small slice of its work, and that costs it ground.
- Client scores sit below nearly every agency here, but far more reviews back them than most.
- Reach is the ceiling, because traffic sits far below the two agencies above it.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Clients praise its project management, tracked in tools like Jira and Slack, and its flexibility. Several note a good balance of creative and technical skill. The one repeated concern is the early sales stage, where delays and mixed messages crept in.
Our Take
Bluegrass suits a company whose website sits inside a bigger system and needs a long-term development partner. If you need a straightforward design-led site, choose a studio where design is the main job.
4. GO-Globe — Best if You Want a Website That Connects to Your Business Tools

- Website: go-globe.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $5,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.38 (100 reviews)
- Team Size: 39 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 21
- Monthly Website Visits: 2,089
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
GO-Globe’s clients range from media companies and non-profits to IT firms and consumer-product brands. Some are small businesses, and others are large enterprises and government bodies.
What they buy is often more than a website. Web design sits beside ERP and CRM systems, business portals, and internal platforms.
I like the plain pitch: automate repetitive work so a company can grow without adding staff.
Lately the focus has drifted toward AI. It now sells chatbots and answer engine optimization, which aims to get a brand cited in AI answers.
If you need a plain website, you may buy more than you need. If your site has to plug into business systems, this is where it gets interesting.
Core Services
- Web design and development
- SEO and answer engine optimization
- ERP and CRM systems and business portals
- AI automation and chatbots
- Branding and mobile apps
Why They Rank #4
- Its hourly rate sits in the cheapest tier, and clients still give it a perfect score for value.
- Only two agencies draw more visitors, so it reaches well beyond most agencies here.
- Its client rating sits below most, yet only one agency has more reviews behind its score.
- Web design is a small share of its work, and that thin focus keeps it from climbing higher.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
The small set of Clutch reviews is all five stars, praising project management and fair prices. Clients say the team puts in extra time. The only gentle complaint is speed, which one client accepted as the cost of a busy studio.
Our Take
Choose GO-Globe if your site must connect to tools like CRM or ERP and costs matter. If you only need a well-designed brand site, its wider tech focus adds little. In that case, a design-led studio fits better.
5. Wao Host — For Small Projects That Need Design and Hosting Together

- Website: waohost.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $5,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.80 (92 reviews)
- Team Size: 14 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 19
- Monthly Website Visits: 337
- Employee Review Score: 2.50 (2 reviews)
Overview
Wao Host lists construction and finance among its client industries. Finance is a big part of the local economy, so that pairing makes sense.
It also sells the plumbing behind a site: domains, shared hosting, VPS plans, and reseller hosting. That lets you buy the build and its home from one place.
The build side runs on a wide stack. WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla sit next to .NET, Laravel, and React.
Its tagline, Still Webbing Africa, hints at ambition beyond one market. It also says it serves clients abroad.
I’d read it as a builder plus host for small and mid-size projects. If you want one invoice for site and hosting, it fits. If you want a design-only studio, it doesn’t.
Core Services
- Website design
- Web and mobile application development
- Digital marketing
- Web hosting and domains, including shared, VPS, and reseller plans
- Corporate branding
Why They Rank #5
- Clients rate it highly on a large pool of reviews, and just two agencies have more.
- Web design is a big share of what it sells, larger than at three agencies above it.
- Its hourly rate sits in the cheapest tier, which keeps day-to-day work affordable.
- Staff sentiment is the weak spot, but two reviews are too few to trust the score.
- A small team and modest traffic cap its reach next to the four agencies above it.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
There is no review text to summarize for Wao Host, because Clutch lists none yet. The strong rating in the data block comes from other sources. Ask for client references and a few live sites before you commit.
Our Take
Wao Host works for a small business that wants its site and hosting handled by one team. If you need proof of staff stability or a large delivery team, ask harder questions before you sign.
6. Cloudfusion — For Small Businesses That Want a Clear, Simple Site

- Website: cloudfusion.co.za
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.90 (50 reviews)
- Team Size: 2 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 21
- Monthly Website Visits: 81
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
Cloudfusion’s case studies lean toward safari operators and investment firms. One shows its range: a brand identity first, then a website redesign to match. The list also includes a university event site and a multilingual trading firm.
The team compares a website to a shop. You judge a shop in seconds, so the first screen has to make a good impression.
Behind that is a network of specialists spread across the globe, not one big office.
The scope stays practical: sites, hosting, branding, and search help.
I’d trust it for a clear, well-built small-business site. If you need enterprise capacity or complex integrations, pick a larger firm.
Core Services
- Website design and development
- Hosting and domains
- Branding and print design
- Mobile apps and custom web applications
- Digital strategy and SEO help
Why They Rank #6
- Web design makes up a big share of its work, fifth-highest on the list.
- Clients give it a near-perfect rating, and only four agencies have more reviews behind theirs.
- Value for money scores near the top too. Its hourly rate sits in the cheapest tier.
- A team of two is among the smallest here, which caps how many projects it can carry.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
The surprise in Cloudfusion’s reviews is hosting. Clients call it reliable and quick to fix, with a CDN behind it. Web work earns praise for fast turnarounds and flexibility. The only nudge is one client wanting more proactive ideas on site speed and online reputation.
Our Take
Cloudfusion fits a small business or tourism brand that wants a clear website from a small, reliable team. If you need a big agency for complex integrations or a fast multi-person build, choose a larger firm.
7. SyberGrupe — For Small Businesses That Want Marketing and a Site Together

- Website: sybergrupe.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 5.00 (9 reviews)
- Team Size: 2 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 14
- Monthly Website Visits: N/A
- Employee Review Score: 5.00 (1 review)
Overview
SyberGrupe’s clients tend to be manufacturers and retailers. That fits a shop built around selling. It treats a website as one channel in a wider plan.
The team calls this an omnichannel approach. Search, social, ads, and the site are planned together and guided by insight, not guesswork.
It presents itself as a marketing agency first, with in-house developers behind the sites. That matters if you want the people building your pages to understand what they must sell.
The team is tiny. I read that as a plus if you want to talk to the people doing the work. It’s a limit if you need several projects at once.
Expect a small studio, not an agency machine.
Core Services
- Website design and development
- Search engine optimization
- Social media management
- Google Ads and paid campaigns
- Mobile app and ecommerce development
Why They Rank #7
- Clients give it top marks for value, and its hourly rate sits in the cheapest tier here.
- That perfect client rating rests on fewer reviews than most, so it’s promising, not proven.
- Web design makes up 10% of its work, so it trails the web-first agencies.
- With a team of two, it can’t carry the volume of the larger agencies above it.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
One detail keeps coming up in SyberGrupe’s Clutch reviews: the CEO stays involved in the work. Clients also praise quick, proactive replies and fair pricing. They credit its redesigns and campaigns with better credibility and search results. I found no repeated complaint.
Our Take
Hire SyberGrupe if you’re a small business that wants a site plus marketing from one team. If you need a large build with many people working at once, pick an agency with more hands.
8. Advertising Solutions Web Design — For Simple Sites, Built Fast

- Website: advertisingsolutions.co.za
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 5.00 (8 reviews)
- Team Size: 2 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 12
- Monthly Website Visits: 719
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
Its pitch is a short one: quick, easy, and affordable web design. Few agencies here say it so plainly.
Most of the work centers on WordPress sites and landing pages. Those are the two things small businesses ask for first, and both are fast to build.
It says it serves clients remotely, wherever they are, so you don’t need to sit near the team.
The team is tiny. I’d call that a trade-off, because a small bench gets stretched when things get busy.
If you want a simple site fast on a small budget, call it. If you want a long strategy phase, it isn’t.
Core Services
- Website design
- WordPress website design and development
- Landing page design
- Web hosting
- Graphic design and digital marketing help
Why They Rank #8
- Web design is the whole business here, the highest share of any agency on this list.
- Only four agencies draw more visitors, which is solid reach for a team of two.
- Clients give value a top score, and the hourly fee is at the bottom of the range.
- Its review volume, well below most here, is the weak spot: the perfect rating is a thin sample.
- Two people can only carry so much work, and that keeps it under the larger agencies above it.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
I couldn’t find a review text for this agency on Clutch. The perfect rating in the data block comes from a small set of reviews elsewhere. Before you commit, ask to speak with two past clients and open a few of its live sites.
Our Take
Call Advertising Solutions if you want a simple WordPress site or landing page, fast and affordable. If you need a long strategy phase or a large team, look elsewhere first.
9. Agent Orange Design — For Brand-Led Design With Reports and Print

- Website: agentorange.co.za
- Minimum Project Cost: $5,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 5.00 (36 reviews)
- Team Size: 8 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 29
- Monthly Website Visits: 280
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
Agent Orange does a lot of quiet, serious work. Annual reports, research reports, and campaign pieces for companies, charities, and government all sit in its portfolio. That is design where clarity matters more than flash.
Johannesburg is packed with corporate headquarters, so demand for reports and brand work stays steady. Studios chase it from every direction.
Consumer brands show up too. Its work includes packaging for a biscuit maker and logos for a washing powder and a horse-transport firm.
Logos and brand identity still head its services list, with websites, print, video, and photography beside them. Its stated aim is that its success depends on yours.
I’d treat it as a brand studio that builds sites. If the site is your only need, a web-first agency may serve you better.
Core Services
- Website design and development
- Logo design and brand identity
- Graphic design for print, including reports and brochures
- Video and motion graphics
- Professional photography
Why They Rank #9
- Only one agency on the list has operated longer, which points to a long record of steady delivery.
- Its perfect client rating rests on more reviews than most agencies here, so the praise is credible.
- Clients also give top marks for value, even with a mid-tier hourly rate.
- Web design is a small share of its work. That costs it ground against web-first agencies.
- Traffic is modest next to most agencies above it, so reach caps its rank.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Judge Agent Orange by its portfolio first. Clutch has no reviews for it. The perfect rating rests on a larger set elsewhere that I couldn’t read in detail. The work itself is the best evidence here.
Our Take
Choose Agent Orange if you want your logo, print, and site from one long-running design team. If you only need a fast, low-cost website, a web-first agency is the better fit.
10. Sadja WebSolutions — For Small Firms That Want Web, Apps, and Marketing

- Website: sadjawebsolutions.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.40 (41 reviews)
- Team Size: 26 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 12
- Monthly Website Visits: 394
- Employee Review Score: 3.00 (1 review)
Overview
Sadja’s clients are mostly small businesses in business services, logistics, banking, and real estate.
It builds more than websites. Mobile apps, ERP systems, cloud setups, and custom software sit on its list too.
On the web side, the stack is broad. Magento stores and WordPress sit beside Laravel, React, and Next.js. It works remotely with clients across the globe, so distance is not a barrier.
I’d say breadth is its selling point. It suits small firms that want a site plus marketing on top. If web design is your only need, that spread may be more than you want. You may pay for a range you never use.
Core Services
- Website design and development
- Ecommerce development, including Magento
- Mobile app development
- SEO, paid ads, email, and social media marketing
- ERP, cloud, and custom software
Why They Rank #10
- Its team is larger than at most agencies here, so it can run several projects at once.
- Only six agencies draw more visitors, so it reaches well beyond most of the field.
- Clients rate its value 5.0, and it charges $50 an hour.
- The client rating is its weakest score, below nearly every agency here. Plenty of reviews make it credible.
- Web design is a small share of its work, near the bottom here, and that holds it back.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Most of Sadja’s reviews sit on directories other than Clutch. The handful I could see were positive but few. That’s not enough to spot a pattern. Ask for references you can call before you decide.
Our Take
Pick Sadja if you’re a small business that wants a site and a marketing plan together. If you want a sharply designed brand site, ask a more design-focused agency for a quote first.
11. Webillism Website Design and Digital Marketing — For Online Shops That Want the Founder’s Own Hands

- Website: webillism.co
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 5.00 (24 reviews)
- Team Size: 10 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 26
- Monthly Website Visits: N/A
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
Webillism is a founder-led studio, and the founder brings an unusual mix: fine art, programming, advertising, and consulting.
Derek Steyn freelanced as a web designer for many years before he built the agency around that practice. The promise that follows is simple: senior hands on every project, not a handoff to juniors.
Its clients include business services, medical, legal, marketing, and IT firms. They sit across South Africa, the UK, Europe, and the US.
It builds mostly on WordPress and Shopify, which keeps sites easy for owners to manage. If you want the founder’s own eye on your site, this is a fair match. If you need a big team, it isn’t.
Core Services
- Custom web design
- Ecommerce websites, mainly WordPress and Shopify
- Google Ads management
- Digital marketing
- Website support
Why They Rank #11
- A perfect client rating rests on more reviews than at most agencies here, so the rating is credible.
- Value for money gets a top score, and the hourly rate is in the cheapest tier.
- Web design is a bigger share of its work than at most agencies here.
- Only three agencies here have operated longer, which points to a steady record behind those reviews.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Webillism’s Clutch reviews read as uniformly happy. Clients call it a reliable, flexible partner that goes the extra mile, and several stay for years. Their own customers praise the finished sites too. The highlights I read named no area for improvement.
Our Take
Hire Webillism if you run an online shop and want the founder’s own hands on the build. If you need a team for a big, fast project, look at a larger agency.
12. Vegatech — For Small Firms That Want a Clean, Search-Ready Site

- Website: vegatech.co.za
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 5.00 (28 reviews)
- Team Size: 3 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 5
- Monthly Website Visits: 389
- Employee Review Score: 3.50 (2 reviews)
Overview
Vegatech’s clients are the kind of businesses that need a clear site more than a big campaign. An architecture firm, a physiotherapy practice, a construction company, and a pet-sitting service all appear on its list.
One project shows the range. It gave an architecture firm a fresh website and an SEO upgrade in the same job.
The studio says it treats each build as its own project and listens before it designs. I like that order.
It was started by Tiaan Visagie, a developer with a computer science degree, right after the national lockdown. He used that time to deepen his web development and SEO skills.
A directory of South African agencies has listed it among its top web design picks. That is a decent early sign for a young studio.
Expect a young studio with a small-business client list, not a large agency.
Core Services
- WordPress web design and development
- Search engine optimization
- Ecommerce and custom web builds
- Mobile app development
- Web hosting
Why They Rank #12
- Only seven agencies draw more visitors, which is a strong reach for a studio this young.
- Clients give value for money a top score, and the hourly rate sits mid-range for this list.
- Only one agency here is younger, so there is little track record behind the ratings.
- Web design is a middling share of its work, so focus can’t carry it higher.
- With a team of three, it can’t match the capacity of the larger agencies above it.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Clients describe Vegatech as easy to talk to and quick to deliver, often ahead of schedule. Sites come out clean, modern, and mobile-friendly, and SEO help gets a mention too. I found no repeated complaint in the review highlights I read.
Our Take
Hire Vegatech if you’re a small business that wants a clean, search-ready site from a focused, young team. If you need a long track record or a big team, choose an older agency.
13. Nerx Agency — For Small and Mid-Size Firms That Want Design and Marketing Together

- Website: nerx.co.za
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.45 (9 reviews)
- Team Size: 6 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 10
- Monthly Website Visits: N/A
- Employee Review Score: 5.00 (1 review)
Overview
Nerx’s client list has a clear center of gravity. Medical practices come first, followed by business services, non-profits, real estate, and education. I read that as an agency that adapts, not one tied to a single niche.
The size mix is wide too. Small businesses make up the largest share, with mid-size firms and a few large enterprises behind them.
One package covers most of what a growing site needs: design, search optimization, paid ads, content, and analytics.
If you run a small or mid-size business and want design and marketing from one team, it fits. Ask how many people will work on your project before you sign.
Core Services
- Website design and development
- Search engine optimization
- PPC management
- Content creation
- Analytics and reporting
Why They Rank #13
- Clients give value for money a top score, and the hourly rate sits mid-range for this list.
- Web design is a middling share of its work, so focus can’t lift it.
- Most agencies here have been operating longer, so there is less track record behind it.
- The client rating is its weakest score, below most of the list, and few reviews back it. That keeps it under the agencies above.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Nerx’s Clutch reviews lean warm. Clients cite functional, responsive sites, better search visibility, and careful content and design work, often in long partnerships. The main concern is capacity, with a few projects running late. Otherwise, I found little to complain about.
Our Take
Hire Nerx if you’re a small or mid-size business that wants a site, search work, and content together. If you have a tight launch date, confirm its capacity in writing first.
14. Edot Digital — For Established Small Businesses That Want a Steady Studio

- Website: edot.co.za
- Minimum Project Cost: $5,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 5.00 (27 reviews)
- Team Size: 4 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 27
- Monthly Website Visits: 22
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
Edot Digital builds for established small and mid-size businesses. Analyte Consulting, Fire-IT, and Audio Note all sit on its client list.
It has been at this for decades. It describes itself as owner-managed, and Steve Parsons is the name clients know.
It is also a Google Ads partner, which matters if paid search is part of your plan.
The team is small and close-knit. It sells web builds, ecommerce, SEO, and ads under one roof. You deal with the same few people.
I’d match it to a business that wants a steady, long-serving studio. If you want a big team or fast experiments, look elsewhere.
Core Services
- Website design and development
- Ecommerce websites
- Search engine optimization
- Google Ads management
- Digital marketing
Why They Rank #14
- Only two agencies on the list have been operating longer, which points to a settled, steady studio.
- Clients give value for money a top score, and the hourly rate sits mid-range for this list.
- The perfect client rating rests on more reviews than at most agencies here.
- Traffic is its weak spot, in the lower half of the list, so reach is limited.
- A team of four caps how much it can run, and that holds it below the agencies above.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Edot’s reviews live on Google, not Clutch. The ones I could read praise a small, skilled team and tailored sites. They also credit an owner who always finds a solution. Communication gets particular credit. I saw no complaints, but I read only a handful.
Our Take
Hire Edot if you’re an established small business that wants a long-serving studio for a site and ads. If you need a large team or a fast launch schedule, pick a bigger agency.
15. Glucode — For App-First Projects With a Website Alongside

- Website: glucode.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $25,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.75 (19 reviews)
- Team Size: 70 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 17
- Monthly Website Visits: 290
- Employee Review Score: 3.80 (15 reviews)
Overview
Glucode builds apps first and websites second. Its clients come from finance, insurance, health, transport, and entertainment.
Finance work has a natural home where the stock exchange and big banks anchor business life. Glucode also says it builds for clients around the world.
It calls itself an award-winning studio for mobile and UI/UX design. I’d treat that as its home turf.
The process covers strategy, design, testing, launch, and maintenance. Its stated approach is to listen, investigate, and learn, then craft experiences users enjoy.
Expect an app studio with a web practice, priced for large budgets. If you need a simple business site, it’s more than you need.
Core Services
- Web design and development
- UI and UX design
- iOS and Android app development
- Strategy and consultation
- Quality assurance, maintenance, and updates
Why They Rank #15
- Only three agencies have larger teams, so it can staff several big projects at once.
- Employee reviews outnumber all but two agencies, so the staff score is well tested.
- Traffic is solid, with only ten agencies drawing more visitors.
- Web design is a small share of its work, at the bottom of the list. That holds it back.
- Clients rate value for money lowest on the list, and only one agency asks for more upfront.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
The Google reviews are all I could read for Glucode, since Clutch has none. They praise its professionalism and how it turns rough ideas into clear user journeys. They are few, and all I saw were positive.
Our Take
Choose Glucode if you’re building a serious mobile app with a website alongside, and the budget matches. If you only need a marketing site, an agency built for the web will cost far less.
16. Studio Vene Design — For Research and Education Projects That Want One Experienced Hand

- Website: studiovene.co.za
- Minimum Project Cost: $10,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 5.00 (10 reviews)
- Team Size: 1 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 25
- Monthly Website Visits: N/A
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
Studio Vene Design leans toward science, technology, research, and innovation, plus conferences and education. Those clients want clear information and easy updates more than flashy effects.
Most of its work comes from repeat clients and referrals. In a studio this small, that says more than any sales pitch.
It also covers the jobs around a site: email campaigns, social media, web writing, hosting, and print design. You get one desk for all of it.
A long list of awards from creative, public relations, and web-industry bodies backs up the craft. It has run for a long time as a very small studio. I’d call that a strength for personal service. It is a risk if you need cover during holidays or fast growth.
Expect personal attention from a small studio, not an agency team.
Core Services
- Website design and development
- Newsletters and email campaigns
- Social media management
- Domain registration and hosting
- Writing for the web and graphic design for print
Why They Rank #16
- Web design is a bigger share of its work than at most agencies here, with only four higher.
- Only six agencies have operated longer, which points to a steady, proven studio.
- Clients give value for money a top score, and the hourly rate sits mid-range for this list.
- Only two agencies ask for more upfront, which keeps small projects out of reach.
- A team of one is the smallest possible here, which caps how much work it can take.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Studio Vene’s Clutch reviews are all top marks, mostly from academic and research clients. They praise a strong grasp of look and function, personal service, and easy-to-manage sites. The one suggestion is more proactive advice on issues and features.
Our Take
Hire Studio Vene if you run a research, education, or conference project and want one experienced hand. If you need a team that can move fast on a large build, pick a bigger agency.
17. Mut-Con (Pty) Ltd — For Small Businesses That Want Strategy Before Design

- Website: mut-con.co.za
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.80 (62 reviews)
- Team Size: 5 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 9
- Monthly Website Visits: 49
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
Mut-Con starts as a consultancy and ends as a web and marketing shop. Its motto is insights for success, and it pitches mostly at small businesses.
The philosophy is plain: tools are a means to an end. What matters is using them to win customers, not owning them.
It is a HubSpot partner, which suits its marketing-led approach. Every task ties back to results. The service list covers website development, email, social media, search marketing, and SEO. That is a broad set to run well.
If you want strategy before pixels, this fits. You get advice first and a site second. If you want a design-led studio, look elsewhere.
Core Services
- Website development
- Search engine optimization
- Search engine marketing
- Email marketing
- Social media marketing
Why They Rank #17
- Only three agencies have more reviews behind their client rating, so its score is well tested.
- Its hourly rate sits in the cheapest tier, and clients score value well, if not perfectly.
- Only seven agencies are younger, so the track record is shorter than most.
- Web design is a small share of its work, at the bottom of the list. That holds it back.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Only ratings were visible for Mut-Con, not the review text behind them. The ratings are strong and rest on many reviews. That is enough to trust the scores but not to describe themes. Ask for two client references in your industry.
Our Take
Pick Mut-Con if you’re a small business that wants marketing advice and a website from the same team. If you want a design-led studio with a big portfolio, choose one that treats design as the core.
Disclosure: Our recommendations include both locally headquartered agencies and offshore firms that provide services in this region. Some agencies featured do not maintain a physical office here but have an established track record of delivering services to clients in the area.
Key Factors to Consider When Choosing a Web Design Agency
You can pick the right web design company by checking a few key factors. These six checks do most of the sorting. Run them in order, and your shortlist shrinks fast.
1. Review the Portfolio for Real Results
Open their last few projects on your phone. Look past the visuals and ask what changed for the client, such as more enquiries or faster pages.
Check the UI/UX design as you scroll, because confusing menus cost leads. I treat a portfolio with no results as a warning sign.
2. Ask for Transparent Pricing
Gauteng’s economy is growing, but jobs are still being lost, so every rand counts. Ask for a written scope and a clear price upfront.
Most web design companies charge between R500 and R1,500 per hour. Check our website design cost data if a quote looks far outside that range.
3. Check Their SEO Skills
People here often search by suburb, like Sandton or Midrand. Ask how the agency will help you show up for those searches.
Good SEO starts at the build, with clean structure and correct meta tags for search engines. Then ask who runs it after launch.
4. Test How They Communicate
Your customers may speak more than one of South Africa’s official languages. Ask who writes and updates content in each.
Then test the team with one real email, and watch how fast and how clearly they reply. How they answer before you pay is how they’ll answer after.
5. Plan for Growth
Officials pitch Gauteng as a gateway to African markets, so your needs may outgrow one city. Ask how the site will handle new pages, languages, or a shop later. Solid content management systems let a site grow without a rebuild.
6. Look for Local Experience
Pretoria is a short drive away, so many buyers compare agencies across the whole Gauteng corridor. That makes a Johannesburg street address a weak signal.
Ask for South African clients you can call, because a proven track record here beats a polished pitch.
Red Flags to Watch for When Hiring a Web Design Agency
Most bad hires trace back to a few avoidable mistakes. These eight are the ones to catch early. Each one costs you time, money, or both.
Choosing on Price Alone
Published prices here contradict each other, and packages start around R2,999. The cheapest quote often leaves out design, content, or support. Compare what each price includes, not just the total. A low number that skips half the work isn’t low.
Ignoring SEO Until After Launch
Searchers add words like best and top, and directories crowd page one. A new site won’t beat them on day one.
Ask for search engine optimization built into the design, and plan ongoing digital marketing to climb. If SEO matters more than design, compare dedicated SEO agencies instead.
Skipping the Portfolio Review
A polished sales deck proves little. Ask to see live sites, and click through them yourself. Then ask for a walk through their web design process, from first call to launch. If they can’t explain it plainly, expect surprises.
Not Checking Reviews
Read the reviews before you sign. Start with the three-star ones, because that’s where real problems show up. Look for the same complaint repeating, like missed deadlines or slow replies. One bad review is noise, but five alike is a pattern.
Overlooking Mobile
Most South Africans reach the internet on mobile data, and few have a home connection. A site that only looks good on a desktop loses visitors fast.
Test the agency’s own work on a phone, and ask about responsive web design. Agencies offering responsive web design services are worth a look.
Having No Ongoing Support Plan
Basic packages often have no recurring fees after launch. That’s fine until a plugin breaks and nobody responds. First quotes also tend to skip hosting, SSL, and maintenance.
Ask for ongoing support in writing, because you need more than just a website. Website maintenance plans spell out exactly what’s covered.
Forgetting Who Owns the Site
Some buyers learn who owns the domain and the code only when they try to leave. Ask before you sign, and get the answer in the contract. You should hold the domain, the files, and the logins.
Overlooking POPIA and Local Payments
POPIA touches every form, cookie, and data field on your site, yet many small sites ignore it. If you sell online, check that the agency connects local gateways like PayFast, Ozow, and Peach Payments. Ask to see stores they’ve already built.

Making Your Final Choice
The best of the web design agencies in Johannesburg is the one that fits your project. It is not always the top score.
Use the ranking to build a shortlist of three, then read those profiles closely. Check each weak spot against your own needs.
If nothing here fits, our list of web design agencies in South Africa covers more options.
A small studio may serve a simple site well, while a larger team suits a complex build. If a Johannesburg studio doesn’t fit, agencies in Cape Town are worth a look too.
Newer buyer guides here judge a website by the enquiries it brings in, not looks alone. So ask each agency how it tracks leads after launch.
That question separates polished pitches from real results. Our wider guide to web design agencies covers the same checks for other cities.
Then ask for two client references and open a live site on your phone. Run the numbers through our website cost calculator before you request quotes. Once those check out, you’re ready to move forward with confidence.
Our Research and Ranking Process
Why This Ranking Is Different
Most agency roundups lean on editorial opinion, self-reported claims, or paid placement. That makes it hard to see why any agency sits where it does.
This ranking works differently. Every one of the web design agencies serving Johannesburg goes through the same repeatable scoring framework.
Three rules keep it fair. Every agency is scored with the same framework. Physical location alone earns no points, so no agency gains extra for being local. And no agency paid for inclusion or a higher position.
Research beyond the numbers is a separate step. Service pages, portfolios, case studies, awards, and certifications help us understand each agency and write its profile. They don’t add or subtract points unless they match one of the weighted metrics below.
Where Your Data Comes From
We collected the data independently during 2026. Every number comes from a public source, so you can check it yourself.
Website traffic comes from SEMrush, which gives an estimate of monthly visits. Client ratings and review counts come from Clutch, DesignRush, G2, Google Business Profile, and Trustpilot.
Employee ratings and review counts come from Glassdoor and Indeed. Team size comes from LinkedIn. Agency websites and other public sources supply services, pricing, hourly rates, minimum project size, and business history.
We also read service pages, portfolios, case studies, public client examples, awards, partnerships, and certifications.
That confirmed each agency’s web design capabilities and gave context for the profiles. Unless represented by one of the weighted metrics below, these qualitative findings do not affect the numerical score.
The Five Dimensions That Shape Your Rankings
Each agency is scored across five weighted areas. Four add points, and pricing takes points away when costs are higher.
1. Web Design Focus & Value Assessment (20%)
This category measures how central web design is to an agency’s offering. It also reflects how clients rate the value they received relative to cost.
| Metric | Weight | How We Calculated It |
| Web Design Focus | 10% | Web design appeared as a core agency service |
| Client Rating for Cost | 10% | Average cost/value rating from selected review platforms |
Agencies gain when web design is a real part of their business, and clients report strong value. Nothing beyond these two measures counts here.
2. Brand Authority (45%)
Brand Authority measures visibility, scale, and operating history.
| Metric | Weight | How We Calculated It |
| Website Traffic | 20% | Higher estimated SEMrush traffic contributed more points |
| LinkedIn Team Size | 15% | Larger teams contributed more points |
| Years in Business | 10% | Longer operating histories contributed more points |
We use these metrics to compare how visible, how well staffed, and how stable each agency is. A bigger agency is not automatically a better one. These signals only describe scale.
3. Client Satisfaction (30%)
This category combines rating quality with review volume.
| Metric | Weight | How We Calculated It |
| Average Client Rating | 15% | Combined ratings from selected review platforms |
| Total Client Reviews | 15% | Greater review volume contributed more confidence to the score |
A high rating with many reviews carries more weight than the same rating with only a few. Review themes do not score separately. They appear in each profile’s Snapshot of Client Reviews.
4. Employee Satisfaction (25%)
Employee ratings add one more signal about how stable an agency is.
| Metric | Weight | How We Calculated It |
| Average Employee Rating | 10% | Average rating from Glassdoor and Indeed |
| Number of Employee Reviews | 15% | Greater review volume reduced the influence of very small samples |
Both the rating and the number of reviews matter. A strong score from a handful of reviews counts for less than the same score from many. We keep this tied to the measured data.
5. Cost Accessibility Adjustment (-20%)
This is the only category that subtracts points.
| Metric | Weight | How We Calculated It |
| Hourly Rate | -10% | Higher hourly rates received larger deductions |
| Minimum Project Cost | -10% | Higher entry costs reduced accessibility scores |
This does not mean expensive agencies deliver worse work. It only reflects how accessible each agency is across a wider range of budgets. The combined adjustment can reach 20 points, so it can move a ranking.
How the Final Score Works
Each metric is put on the same scale, weighted, and combined into a score out of 100.
Positive metrics contribute up to 120 points. The Cost Accessibility Adjustment can deduct up to 20 points, based on hourly rate and minimum project cost.
No single metric decides an agency’s rank. Larger agencies may gain from stronger traffic, team size, or longevity. Smaller agencies may lead on client satisfaction, employee sentiment, web design focus, value, or affordability.
Only the weighted metrics affect rankings. Awards, clients, partnerships, certifications, and case studies may appear in a profile. So may portfolio quality, local presence, and technical expertise. None of them changes a score.
This framework lets us compare agencies of different sizes, pricing models, and market positions on equal terms.
Disclosure: All rankings and scores are based solely on publicly available data collected at the time of publication. These rankings reflect the market landscape at the time of publication. Although individual metrics may change over time, the evaluation framework prioritizes long-term capability signals, making major ranking fluctuations unlikely.
