Web design agencies in San Jose are easy to find. The hard part is choosing one.
San Jose buyers choose from agencies in Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, and Palo Alto too. That crowded field makes agencies sound alike.
A startup founder can’t easily tell a true B2B specialist from a team that builds brochure sites. Pick wrong, and you pay twice, once for the site and again for the rebuild.
I evaluated 53 agencies to cut through that noise. I looked at pricing, client reviews, team size, and years in business for each one.
The research draws on Clutch, DesignRush, G2, Glassdoor, Indeed, LinkedIn, and SEMrush. Every agency got the same scoring, so the order reflects data, not opinion.
Use the ranking below to build a shortlist. The profiles show who each agency suits and where it may fall short.

Detailed Reviews of Each Web Design Agency
Here’s what the scores don’t show. Services, strengths, and where each one falls short.
1. Milestone Inc — Best if you manage many sites and want design, search, and data on one platform

- Website: milestoneinternet.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.77 (60 reviews)
- Team Size: 549 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 28
- Monthly Website Visits: 8,420
- Employee Review Score: 3.80 (349 reviews)
Overview
Milestone sells web design as one part of a larger platform. That platform includes its own content management system, local search tools, and analytics. Hotel brands fill most of the client logos I found.
Its design process starts on the smallest screen and builds up. Designers use personas and storyboards to map each visitor’s path before layout work starts.
It has also won hospitality-marketing and web awards in recent years.
San Jose’s market leans toward enterprise buyers with long sales cycles. Milestone has the largest team on this list, which suits that kind of buyer. Its logos include global hotel and car brands, which points to multi-country experience.
I would shortlist it if you manage many sites under one brand. A small, design-only project may find the platform more than it needs.
Core Services
- Web design and development, built mobile-first
- Its own content management system
- Local search and SEO tools
- Analytics and reporting
- Hospitality marketing
Why They Rank #1
- Clients rate its value for money tied for the top of this list.
- Only two agencies draw more site visits, and both run far smaller teams.
- Web design is a smaller share of its work than at UPQODE or Lounge Lizard. Its hourly rate sits in the upper range too. Expect a platform pitch, not a design-only one.
- Employee ratings are its weakest spot. A low rating from so many reviews is not noise. In a team this big, it usually points to turnover on long projects.
- It is the only agency here that pairs the largest team with an entry price at the floor.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
The one worry that comes up is staffing, and clients say the team is working on it. Reviewers also praise its quick responses, steady project management, and grasp of hotel marketing and search.
Our Take
Choose Milestone if you run a hotel group, bank, or multi-site brand. It suits teams that want design, search, and data on one platform. Skip it if you need a small, design-only partner for a single brochure site.
2. Channel V Media — Best if you want PR and a new website handled as one brand project

- Website: channelvmedia.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $10,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.85 (23 reviews)
- Team Size: 23 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 18
- Monthly Website Visits: 13,216
- Employee Review Score: 4.25 (10 reviews)
Overview
Channel V Media is a public relations agency that also builds websites. Most of its pitch covers media outreach, content, and executive messaging. Websites are one owned channel among several.
Its website process starts with brand positioning, not mockups. Look and feel, site structure, design, build, and testing follow in order.
The brand-first order shows up in client work too. A law firm got brand strategy and a responsive site in one project. A jewelry brand has stayed for many years, through several online stores and platform moves.
It does not publish prices, so expect to ask for a quote.
I would look at it if you need PR and a new site as one project. If you only need a design build, a design-focused agency will likely fit better.
Core Services
- Web design and development, starting from brand positioning
- Brand strategy
- Public relations and media outreach
- Content and executive messaging
- HubSpot and Shopify builds
Why They Rank #2
- Its site draws more visits than any other agency on this list, so buyers find it easily.
- Clients rate its value for money tied for the top of this list. That holds even with a mid-range entry price.
- The ratings are strong, but the client and employee review pools are small. Treat them as promising, not proven.
- A small team and a smaller web design share than Milestone keep it out of the top spot.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
What surprised me is how little of the feedback covers websites. Nearly every review praises its PR and media work, calling the team creative and proactive. The only complaint is mild: one client wanted an earlier warning when work ran long.
Our Take
Hire Channel V if PR drives your plan and a new site is part of the same story. Pass if you only need a design build, since a design specialist will likely fit better.
3. Clay — Best if you have a real budget and want a product-grade site for a tech brand

- Website: clay.global
- Minimum Project Cost: $50,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.88 (92 reviews)
- Team Size: 82 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 10
- Monthly Website Visits: 12,049
- Employee Review Score: 4.40 (4 reviews)
Overview
Clay works as a remote-first team of designers, developers, and writers. Co-founders oversee each project, and a design director leads reviews.
I found web redesign work for Grayscale and an interactive demo built for Slack. Both show a product-style approach to web work.
Projects start with discovery, then a recommended engagement model, then a custom proposal. Design systems are part of the handoff, so your team can keep the work consistent after launch.
Funded startups and AI firms drive much of San Jose’s web demand. Clay’s clients and team are global, which suits that crowd.
I would shortlist it if you have a real budget and a product-style site to build. A quick, low-cost brochure site is a poor match.
Core Services
- Website design and redesign
- Web development
- Interactive, product-style demos and sites
- Design systems for handoff
- Content and copywriting
Why They Rank #3
- Only two agencies in the top six earn higher client ratings. Only two also have deeper review pools behind them.
- Only one agency on this list draws more site visits, so it is easy to find.
- Its team is mid-sized for this list. That fits a few large projects at once. It does not fit Milestone-scale programs, which helps explain why Milestone ranks above it.
- Employee ratings rest on only a handful of reviews, so they show little.
- Its value-for-money rating is the lowest in the top six. The entry price is among the highest on this list, so budget is its clearest barrier.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Quality of work is the theme almost everyone returns to, followed by smooth project handling and clear updates. Complaints cluster around cost. They cite a high price tag, a change order that raised the bill, and friction with overseas developers.
Our Take
Pick Clay if you are a funded tech brand with a real budget and a product-style site. Avoid it for a low-cost launch, since the entry price puts small projects out of reach.
4. UPQODE — Best if you want a custom WordPress site at a clear, published price

- Website: upqode.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $5,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.93 (148 reviews)
- Team Size: 48 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 12
- Monthly Website Visits: 3,887
- Employee Review Score: 4.80 (4 reviews)
Overview
UPQODE builds most of its sites on WordPress. It partners with a WordPress host and sells its own themes, so the platform is home turf.
Its case studies cover media, data security, logistics, finance, and healthcare. That range suggests the process travels well across sectors.
Its site describes work in short sprints, tracked in a project app that clients can open. For a busy marketing lead, that rhythm makes progress easy to see.
Its recent blog posts cover SEO, ecommerce, and site speed. That hints at where it wants to add work.
I would shortlist it for a service business or small tech firm that wants a custom WordPress site. If you need complex product design, look at a larger studio.
Core Services
- Custom WordPress design and development
- WordPress themes
- Hosting through a WordPress partner
- Sprint-based delivery with a client project app
Why They Rank #4
- Web design focus is higher here than at the three agencies above it. That makes it the most specialized in the top four.
- Its hourly rate is the lowest in the top four. Its entry price is also well below Channel V and Clay.
- Reach keeps it out of the top three: all three agencies above it draw far more site visits.
- Employee ratings look strong but rest on only a few reviews, so they prove little.
- No other agency in the top four beats it on client rating or review volume.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Clients call the team patient, detail-oriented, and on time, with clear communication throughout. The complaints are small and practical. Time-zone gaps slow some replies, logo work trails web design, and one request got lost in email.
Our Take
Choose UPQODE for a custom WordPress site at a published price, especially if you like sprint-style updates. Skip it if you need logo work in the same package or fast replies across time zones.
5. Lounge Lizard — Best if you want design, development, and marketing from one long-running team

- Website: loungelizard.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $10,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.77 (79 reviews)
- Team Size: 58 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 28
- Monthly Website Visits: 2,470
- Employee Review Score: 4.20 (29 reviews)
Overview
Lounge Lizard’s web design page lays out a clear order of work. The team maps the site in Slickplan and reviews SEO on existing pages first. A homepage concept in Figma gets approved before any subpage starts.
The client mix is broad: finance, healthcare, software, retail, and manufacturing all appear. That range helps if your sector does not match a niche shop’s focus.
The company grew from a small late-night design crew into a national agency. It began with a tiny monthly ad.
San Jose is the Bay Area’s largest city, which draws full-service national shops into the mix. Lounge Lizard is one of them, with design, development, and marketing under one roof.
I would shortlist it if you want design and marketing from one long-running team. The entry price is steep for a small business that needs only a simple site.
Core Services
- Web design, with sitemap and homepage concept reviews
- Web development
- SEO review of existing pages
- Digital marketing
Why They Rank #5
- Only five agencies on this list have operated longer, which signals staying power.
- Its hourly rate is lower than Milestone, Channel V, or Clay, so each hour of work costs less.
- The $10,000 entry price is steep next to Milestone and UPQODE, which prices out smaller projects.
- All four agencies above it draw more visits, and three earn higher client ratings. That keeps it out of the top four.
- No agency in the top six builds more of its business around web design. That focus is its strongest case.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Repeat clients stand out here. Reviewers credit on-time delivery, responsive project managers, and creative design. Complaints are scattered: thin CMS training material, quiet stretches after launch, and a few rocky starts.
Our Take
Choose Lounge Lizard if you want one long-running team for design, development, and marketing on a larger project. Skip it for a small, simple site, where a lower-priced design shop will do.
6. Storm Brain — Best if you want brand, website, and marketing built by one team

- Website: stormbrain.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $10,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.97 (271 reviews)
- Team Size: 52 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 19
- Monthly Website Visits: 1,724
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
Storm Brain wears its attitude openly. Its tagline says that boring does not win. The name plays on brainstorming, and the founder drew on the ocean and movement for the brand’s energy.
Its portfolio skews toward consumer brands such as spirits, supplements, music gear, and film. Banks and a cybersecurity firm appear too.
Most builds run on WordPress or Shopify, with Shopify Plus for larger stores. WooCommerce and HubSpot sit on its partner list.
It also collects awards from design and review groups, from Addy and Hermes honors to Clutch rankings.
I would look at it if you want one team for a brand, site, and ads. If you only need a plain site, the full-service setup may be more than you want.
Core Services
- Web design and development on WordPress and Shopify
- Ecommerce on Shopify Plus and WooCommerce
- Branding
- Digital marketing and ads
Why They Rank #6
- Clients rate its value for money above Clay, UPQODE, and Lounge Lizard. That holds even with a higher entry price than UPQODE.
- Its hourly rate is higher than UPQODE or Lounge Lizard, so each hour costs more than at either.
- Web design is a core part of what it sells, level with UPQODE and behind Lounge Lizard.
- Reach holds it back, since its site draws the least traffic of the top six.
- No agency on this list has more client reviews, and the rating stays near perfect.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Almost every review reads like a thank-you note. Clients praise on-time work, fast replies, and a team that feels like part of their own staff. The few concerns are small, such as the occasional slow reply and a missing backend manual.
Our Take
Pick Storm Brain if you want brand, website, and ads from one team and value proven client satisfaction. Pass if you only need a basic site, where a lower-cost design shop will do.
7. EIGHT25MEDIA — Best if you run a B2B or SaaS company and want a strategy-led website from a large team

- Website: eight25media.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $25,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.30 (39 reviews)
- Team Size: 143 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 15
- Monthly Website Visits: 364
- Employee Review Score: 4.00 (68 reviews)
Overview
EIGHT25MEDIA builds most of its sites for B2B and software companies. The client wall mixes funded startups with large enterprises such as Google and Samsung.
Its team is among the biggest here, so design, build, and growth work can run side by side. WordPress is its most common platform, with Drupal and Adobe Experience Manager for enterprise needs.
The design pitch is strategy first. The site says pages should move visitors toward leads and sales, not just look modern.
Its recent writing leans toward conversion work and enterprise website readiness. That hints at where it wants to take more projects.
It does not publish prices, so expect to request a quote. I would shortlist it if you sell to other businesses. It suits a site that backs a sales team. A small local shop will likely find it too big.
Core Services
- Web design for responsive, conversion-focused websites
- Web development on WordPress, Drupal, and Adobe Experience Manager
- UX strategy, user research, and usability testing
- Branding, visual identity, and campaigns
- SEO, conversion optimization, and content strategy
Why They Rank #7
- Only one agency on this list runs a larger team, which leaves room for several workstreams at once.
- Web design makes up a larger share of its work than at all but five agencies here.
- Its price floor is above every top-six agency except Clay, which makes it a stretch for small budgets.
- Its employee reviews run deeper than at almost any agency here. That makes the moderate score a dependable read.
- The lowest client rating on this list is what keeps it out of the top six.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Reviews are mostly warm. Timely delivery, patient project managers, and modern designs earn the most credit. The gripes are specific. They name uneven updates, late design changes, payment timing, and thin help with Salesforce.
Our Take
Hire EIGHT25MEDIA if you are a B2B or SaaS company with a strategy-led site to build. Bring a budget to match. Look elsewhere for a small-budget project or a build that depends on deep Salesforce integration.
8. Burst Digital — Best if you want a research-led website with unlimited revisions and an account manager on call

- Website: burstdgtl.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $5,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.93 (111 reviews)
- Team Size: 21 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 8
- Monthly Website Visits: 305
- Employee Review Score: 5.00 (1 review)
Overview
Burst Digital calls itself a collective of mavericks and digital creatives. It is hiring designers, developers, and marketers right now.
The client list is sector-agnostic. Case studies cover fintech, proptech, hospitality, medical imaging, an AI product, and a non-profit.
One policy stands out. It offers reduced rates to non-profits and sustainability-focused companies, and it plants a small forest for every project.
Its newest push is generative engine optimization, which it markets as AI SEO. Recent blog posts compare SEO and GEO agencies.
I would shortlist it if you want a research-first build with a clear step-by-step process. Its team is small, so very large programs may stretch it.
Core Services
- Custom web design, built in Figma first
- Web development on WordPress, Shopify, and HubSpot
- SEO and generative engine optimization
- Branding and pitch deck design
- PPC, email, and social media marketing
Why They Rank #8
- Only two agencies on this list have more client reviews, and the rating holds up across that volume.
- Its entry price is a fifth of what EIGHT25MEDIA, 500 Designs, and Vardot ask.
- Web design is a smaller share of its work than at EIGHT25MEDIA or 500 Designs. SEO, branding, and paid media take up room too.
- Its perfect employee score rests on one review, so read it as a placeholder, not a verdict.
- Its team is far smaller than EIGHT25MEDIA’s, and its site draws fewer visits. That keeps it from the seventh spot.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Praise is nearly universal and centers on punctual work, open communication, and patient project managers. The only wishes are minor. Some wanted custom imagery over stock photos, and more face time early on.
Our Take
Choose Burst Digital for a research-led build with a process you can follow and room to keep revising. Skip it if your project needs a large in-house team to run work in parallel.
9. 500 Designs — Best if you want a brand refresh and a new website from the same creative team

- Website: 500designs.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $25,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.87 (61 reviews)
- Team Size: 89 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 9
- Monthly Website Visits: 116
- Employee Review Score: 3.10 (75 reviews)
Overview
500 Designs splits its work between websites and the brand and marketing around them. Web design is about half of the business, and branding and growth marketing fill the rest.
Its process runs in three named phases. Blueprint covers research and planning, Foundation builds the site or app, and Expansion adds cross-channel marketing.
Two client projects show the range. For Fresh Del Monte it handled strategy and website design. For Trendpop it added WordPress development.
AI search is its newest addition. Answer engine optimization now sits next to SEO in its growth offer. AI consulting appears in its service mix.
I would shortlist it if you want one team for a brand refresh and a new site. It does not publish prices or name its platforms, so ask both questions early.
Core Services
- Web strategy, website design, and development
- UX audits and usability testing
- Web app design and design systems
- Branding, naming, and messaging
- Growth marketing, including SEO and paid media
Why They Rank #9
- Only Milestone and EIGHT25MEDIA run bigger teams, so capacity is rarely its constraint.
- Half its mix is web design, a higher share than at Burst Digital or Vardot.
- Its site draws less traffic than any other agency in the top twelve. That thin reach, plus a client rating below Burst Digital, keeps it out of the eighth spot.
- Its employee score is the second lowest on this list among agencies with employee reviews. The pool is deep, so it is a real signal. In a team this large, it can mean uneven experiences on long projects.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Praise runs deep and points one way: clear communication, then quality and deadlines met. Gripes are rare. One client had a deadline mix-up, another wanted firmer dates, and a few wanted earlier stakeholder alignment. All called them minor.
Our Take
Choose 500 Designs if you want a brand refresh and a new site from one creative team. Plan a budget well above small-business levels. Skip it for a quick, low-cost launch.
10. Vardot — Best if you run an enterprise, non-profit, or media site on Drupal

- Website: vardot.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $25,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.85 (65 reviews)
- Team Size: 58 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 15
- Monthly Website Visits: 1,520
- Employee Review Score: 4.20 (23 reviews)
Overview
Vardot is a Drupal specialist, and it says so plainly. Design is one service among many, and development carries more of its work.
Its clients lean toward non-profits, universities, government bodies, and publishers. UNHCR is the clearest example, where Vardot built a global donations platform spanning many markets and currencies.
It also builds its own open-source products. Varbase is an AI-powered Drupal distribution, Vargive handles fundraising, and Auditray monitors compliance across many sites.
The team is spread across several countries, and its careers page says it hires for ownership over pedigree.
I would shortlist it if you run a multilingual or multi-brand site on Drupal. If you plan on WordPress, Webflow, or Shopify, look at a different agency.
Core Services
- Experience design (UI/UX) with atomic design systems
- Drupal development and migrations
- Strategy, discovery, and site audits
- Hosting, support, and maintenance
- SEO and AI discoverability
Why They Rank #10
- It draws more site visits than any other agency ranked seventh through twelfth.
- Web design is a smaller share of its work than at EIGHT25MEDIA or 500 Designs. That is its weakest point.
- Only seven agencies on this list set a higher entry price, so it suits funded projects.
- A client rating just under 500 Designs keeps it from the ninth spot. Its web design share is smaller too.
- Its employee pool is the sixth deepest on this list. That makes the solid score a dependable signal.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Cost is the lowest-scoring area in a couple of reviews. A few clients also wanted deeper planning up front, especially on multilingual builds. Even so, reviewers keep returning to on-time delivery, clear communication, and professional project management.
Our Take
Hire Vardot for a multilingual or multi-brand Drupal site at a non-profit, university, or publisher. Avoid it for a WordPress or Shopify project, or any build where design alone is the goal.
11. Moonstone Interactive — Best if you need an enterprise CMS build on Kentico or Optimizely from a long-running team

- Website: msinteractive.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $10,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 5.00 (12 reviews)
- Team Size: 1 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 30
- Monthly Website Visits: 308
- Employee Review Score: 5.00 (1 review)
Overview
Moonstone Interactive leans toward enterprise content management. Its pages list Kentico Xperience, Optimizely, WordPress, and Ektron, with Kentico Silver and Optimizely partner status behind them.
Its case-study list names Microsoft, Fujitsu, and Matthews Asia. Reviewers add software, wealth management, manufacturing, and education clients. The site does not say what it built for each name.
It pushes a data-first approach. Decisions rest on market and competitor research. The site offers an ROI calculator and a trademarked service called Roadmap to Win.
Its most visible recognition is a pair of Clutch badges, Champion and Global.
I would shortlist it if you run on Kentico or Optimizely and want a long-running partner. Its web design page is thin on process, so ask for details before you sign.
Core Services
- Responsive, SEO-minded web design
- Experience design (UX)
- Custom web development, front end and back end
- Content management on Kentico, Optimizely, WordPress, and Ektron
- Conversion optimization with an ROI calculator
Why They Rank #11
- Its rating is perfect, but only a dozen reviews sit behind it. That proves less than the same score at UPQODE or Storm Brain.
- Web design is a small share of its work, level with Burst Digital.
- Its entry price is moderate, below EIGHT25MEDIA, 500 Designs, and Vardot.
- Reach and team size keep it out of the top ten. Its site draws far fewer visits than Vardot’s. LinkedIn also shows almost no staff, so capacity is hard to judge.
- Only two agencies on this list have operated longer, which signals staying power.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Reviewers describe a partner, not a vendor. Code quality, proactive advice, and traffic gains draw the warmest comments. Schedules sometimes slipped, partly from client changes. One reviewer felt the first report of an issue was waved off as user error.
Our Take
Choose Moonstone Interactive for an enterprise CMS built on Kentico or Optimizely with a long-running partner. Skip it for a design-led project, because its web design page says little about the process.
12. EnlightWorks — Best if you want a managed Duda website for a small business or non-profit on a monthly plan

- Website: enlightworks.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.90 (14 reviews)
- Team Size: 7 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 10
- Monthly Website Visits: 315
- Employee Review Score: 5.00 (1 review)
Overview
EnlightWorks sells websites as a managed service, not a one-off build. Most sites run on Duda, with hosting, updates, and growth work bundled into monthly plans.
Its clients are small and mid-sized companies, non-profits, and local service providers. A case study for Precision IT Consulting reports sizable gains in organic visitors and revenue over a year.
The team is tiny. A founder leads six colleagues, and staff appear as avatars on the About page. Its credentials include Duda Expert status and a HubSpot Growth-Driven Design certification. The team also says the Seven Grandfather Teachings guide how it works.
I would shortlist it if you want a hands-off site with a fixed monthly fee. If you need a custom stack beyond Duda, or a large team, look elsewhere.
Core Services
- Custom Duda web design
- Managed website plans with hosting and updates
- SEO, local SEO, and Google Business Profile audits
- Conversion optimization and accessibility work
- Branding and content development
Why They Rank #12
- Only Solid Digital builds more of its business around web design.
- Clients rate its value for money tied for the top of this list.
- The scores are strong but lightly tested, with small review pools on both the client and employee side. A very small team adds to that ceiling.
- It pairs that value with an entry price at the floor of this list.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
With a modest number of reviews, the picture is simple. Clients cite on-time delivery, quick answers, careful design, and accessibility know-how. One non-profit said it was too early to judge value. A manufacturing project ran long, partly from client delays.
Our Take
Pick EnlightWorks if you run a small business or non-profit and want a managed Duda site. Pass if you need a custom stack or a large team on a big project.
13. Cambria Software — Best if you need ongoing development capacity with some UI/UX design on top

- Website: cambria.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $25,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.40 (7 reviews)
- Team Size: 43 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 42
- Monthly Website Visits: 169
- Employee Review Score: 3.80 (11 reviews)
Overview
Cambria Software is a development shop first and a web design firm second. Most of its pitch covers dedicated offshore teams that build and maintain software for clients.
Those teams are matched to your stack and work toward set milestones. You own the source code, and Cambria can also act as employer of record for the staff.
Its case studies show long engagements. One healthcare HR platform kept a large team busy for six years. A mobile client has stayed for a decade.
A physicist founded it, and no other agency here has operated as long.
I would look at it if you need steady development capacity with some design on top. If design is the main goal, a design-led studio will fit better.
Core Services
- Website and web app development, including ASP.NET
- UI/UX design
- E-commerce development
- Dedicated development teams and staff augmentation
- QA and testing
Why They Rank #13
- No agency on this list has operated longer, which signals deep staying power.
- Web design is tied for the smallest share of work on this list. Design is not where it competes.
- Its client rating is the second lowest on this list. One of the thinnest review pools stands behind it, which keeps it out of the top twelve.
- Its hourly rate is tied for the lowest on this list. That is where the offshore model pays off for buyers.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Reviews here pull in two directions. Happy clients cite clear communication, solid work, and long relationships. The lowest score describes a missing project manager, language friction, and per-minute billing for planning calls. Another client saw costs run far above the estimate.
Our Take
Hire Cambria Software for ongoing development capacity with some UI/UX design on top. Agree on billing for planning calls up front. Skip it if design is the main goal, or if you need a firm fixed price.
14. Beesoul LLC — Best if you need a budget-friendly custom site or help getting an AI-built app production-ready

- Website: beesoul.co
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.53 (23 reviews)
- Team Size: 9 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 8
- Monthly Website Visits: 386
- Employee Review Score: 5.00 (1 review)
Overview
Beesoul builds custom websites in Figma first, then develops them on WordPress or .NET. Work runs in three-week sprints, and clients keep ownership of the code.
Its logo wall includes universities such as NC State and the University of Virginia. Case studies reach further, covering construction software, cannabis ecommerce, hotel booking, and a healthcare platform.
The homepage now leads with a different pitch. Beesoul calls itself a fixer for AI-built apps. It offers a free audit of code made with tools like Lovable or Cursor.
Web design is still on the menu, but it is no longer the headline. The team is spread across several countries and led by its founders.
I would shortlist it if you want a low-cost custom site or need an AI-built app made production-ready. Its services page says little about the design process or prices, so ask for both before you commit.
Core Services
- Custom web design, built in Figma first
- WordPress design and development, including WooCommerce and Shopify
- Custom website development on .NET
- Website management and maintenance
- Audits and production fixes for AI-built apps
Why They Rank #14
- Its hourly rate is tied for the lowest on this list. Its entry price sits at the floor.
- Its site draws more visits than every agency ranked seventh through seventeenth, except Vardot.
- Its client rating sits near the bottom of this list, with only five agencies scoring lower. That is its weakest point.
- A single employee review sits behind its top score, so treat that number as a blank.
- Team size and track record keep it below Cambria Software, which is far larger and much older.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Reviews are short on drama. Timeliness comes up most, then communication, project management, and flexibility. Documentation is the only improvement a client named, so the picture is steady rather than detailed.
Our Take
Choose Beesoul for a low-cost custom WordPress or .NET site. It also fits an AI-built app that needs cleanup before launch. Skip it if you need a large team or a studio known mainly for design.
15. Purple Bunny — Best if you want brand, product design, and a website from a small remote design team

- Website: purplebunny.co
- Minimum Project Cost: $10,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 5.00 (11 reviews)
- Team Size: 13 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 14
- Monthly Website Visits: 41
- Employee Review Score: 5.00 (1 review)
Overview
Purple Bunny is a remote design studio where web design shares the stage. Branding, product design, and web design each take a similar slice of the work.
Two projects show how the pieces connect. For Cocos Capital it built product design and brand identity, and it ran a workshop. For Youth Justice Network it delivered brand identity and web design.
Its signature process is a five-day Design Sprint, which blends design thinking with agile feature testing. A Feedly homepage redesign came out of one.
It also sells design as a subscription, so you can hire designers on demand. An AI design service sits on its list too.
I would shortlist it if you want brand and site work from one small, remote team. The About page is thin and no prices are posted, so ask about both.
Core Services
- Website design with an accessibility focus
- Product design, including UX research and UI
- Brand identity and strategy
- Five-day Design Sprints
- Website and app development, in custom code or no-code
Why They Rank #15
- Clients rate its value for money tied for the top of this list.
- Only four agencies charge less per hour, which keeps design time affordable.
- Its perfect client rating rests on one of the thinnest review pools here. That proves less than the same score at Storm Brain.
- Reach and evidence keep it below Beesoul. Its site draws far fewer visits, and fewer clients have rated it.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Quality, schedule, and cost all score a perfect five on the page, and the comments back it up. Clients single out communication, timeliness, and an organized process. The only notes are small. One wanted fuller brand-application examples, and another found some workshop exercises repetitive.
Our Take
Choose Purple Bunny for brand identity and a website from one small remote team. Its subscription option suits ongoing design needs. Skip it if you need heavy development capacity or a studio with a deep review history.
16. ANML, INC — Best if you sell B2B or software and want senior designers working on your site

- Website: anml.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $25,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.97 (29 reviews)
- Team Size: 12 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 14
- Monthly Website Visits: 262
- Employee Review Score: 5.00 (2 reviews)
Overview
ANML focuses on B2B and enterprise software clients. Its logo list includes Zoom, Logitech, and Autodesk, with a heavy tilt toward AI, SaaS, and emerging tech.
One recent job was a homepage redesign for Salesloft. The agency’s site credits it with a higher lead-to-sales rate.
Founder Doug Hughmanick came from Level Studios, a Publicis agency. He worked there on Tesla, ESPN, and Meta projects.
Its Functional Branding Method treats onboarding, motion, and tone as part of the brand. The homepage names the method, but the services page gives no detail.
The About page lists Webby, Davey, and w3 recognition. The team calls itself design geeks who like each other.
I would shortlist it if you sell to technical buyers and want senior people on your site. Expect premium pricing and no posted rates.
Core Services
- B2B and enterprise web design
- UI/UX and digital product design
- Branding, naming, and positioning
- Design systems and motion graphics
- Front-end and headless CMS development on DatoCMS, Sanity, and Contentful
Why They Rank #16
- Web design is the heart of its mix, level with Lounge Lizard and EnlightWorks. Only Solid Digital leans further into it.
- Its client rating matches Storm Brain’s, the best in the top six, though from a much smaller pool.
- Only four agencies charge more per hour, so billable time adds up fast.
- Price keeps it below Purple Bunny. Its hourly rate is triple, and its entry price is more than double, for a similar-sized team.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Little to report on the downside. Reviewers highlight on-time delivery and quality, with collaboration close behind. The nearest thing to a complaint is a wish for formal long-term roadmap planning. Two cost-value scores land slightly under perfect.
Our Take
Hire ANML if you sell to technical buyers and want senior designers on your site and product. Skip it if you need low rates, since pricing sits at the premium end.
17. Exemplifi — Best if you run a government or transit site that needs accessibility and security built in

- Website: exemplifi.io
- Minimum Project Cost: $25,000
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.66 (30 reviews)
- Team Size: 78 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 8
- Monthly Website Visits: 270
- Employee Review Score: 4.95 (80 reviews)
Overview
Exemplifi works mostly with government and transit agencies. The About page names LA Metro, SacRT, and NCTD.
Public work comes with paperwork, and it has the credentials. It holds GSA approval and a security attestation, and it lists a Great Place to Work certification. Past clients also include Moloco, Brafton, and History Colorado.
It builds on many platforms, from WordPress VIP and Drupal to Sitecore and Adobe Experience Manager. Accessibility and security get checked at every stage. It also took a Web Excellence Award in the transportation category.
I would shortlist it if you run a public-sector or transit site. If design alone is your goal, look elsewhere, since development carries most of its work.
Core Services
- Website design and redesign
- Web development on WordPress VIP, Drupal, Sitecore, and more
- Accessibility (WCAG) and security
- Migration, modernization, and hosting
- Support, maintenance, and post-launch training
Why They Rank #17
- Its employee reviews are the deepest on this list after Milestone. That makes the high score a dependable read.
- Only six agencies have bigger teams, which leaves room for several projects at once.
- Web design is tied for the smallest share of work on this list. That is its weakest point.
- Clients rate its value for money below most agencies here.
- A client rating well below ANML’s keeps it from the sixteenth spot. Its web design share is far smaller too.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Flexibility on changing scope tops the praise, followed by fast replies and punctual delivery. Criticism is limited. One client wanted fuller scoping up front. Another hit bugs on a large, complex site, and a third scored a much lower cost.
Our Take
Hire Exemplifi if you run a government or transit site that needs accessibility and security built in. Skip it if you want a boutique design studio or a small, quick project.
Disclosure: Our recommendations include both locally headquartered agencies and offshore firms that provide services in this region. Some agencies featured do not maintain a physical office here but have an established track record of delivering services to clients in the area.
Choosing the Right Web Design Agency: What Matters Most
A shortlist is only half the job. These checks come from how I compared every agency. Use them to test each name before you book a call. If this list misses your niche, browse more web design agency rankings.
1. Review the Portfolio for Work Like Yours
Open each agency’s portfolio and look for projects close to yours. A pretty homepage proves very little. Check for clear UI/UX Design thinking, such as simple menus and fast mobile pages. Ask to see results, not only screenshots.
2. Ask How Pricing Works
A good agency explains what a quote includes and what costs extra. High operating costs in San Jose lift agency rates, and buyer budgets rise with them. A cost calculator gives you a rough range before you ask for quotes. Then compare each quote line by line.
3. Check SEO Capability
Ask how the agency builds SEO into the site before launch. Many local searches use “near me” phrases, and Google answers them with map results first. A strong agency sets up your local listing and page structure early. Ask for examples of sites it has helped rank.
4. Test How They Communicate
Many San Jose founders already run global teams, so clear updates matter. Ask who your contact is and how often you will hear from them.
Pay attention to how fast and how clearly they answer before you sign. Slow replies in the sales stage rarely improve later.
5. Plan for Growth
Your site will change as your company does. Tech firms often rebuild around new products, rebrands, or acquisitions.
Ask whether the agency’s platform and team can handle added pages, tools, and traffic. Ask what happens when you outgrow the first build.
6. Decide How Much Local Presence You Need
San Jose spreads out, so a local agency can still mean a long drive. Decide whether you need in-person meetings or if video calls will do.
For a kickoff and a few reviews, a remote team can work fine. Local knowledge helps most when your customers are nearby.
Mistakes That Can Lead to the Wrong Web Design Agency
Most poor hires trace back to a handful of repeat errors. Here are the ones that matter most when you hire in San Jose.
1. Choosing on Price Alone
Quotes for similar-sounding projects can differ wildly, and website design cost data shows how wide the spread runs.
The cheapest bid often leaves out strategy, testing, or content. A low price can cost more once you pay for fixes. Compare what each quote includes before you compare totals.
2. Ignoring SEO Until After Launch
Local buyers type both “San Jose” and “Silicon Valley” into search. A site built without keyword planning can miss one or both. Page structure fixes after launch cost extra. Ask about SEO before design starts.
3. Skipping the Portfolio Review
Many San Jose firms sell software, chips, or security tools that are hard to explain. Look for SaaS Web Design or similar work that makes a product easy to grasp. An agency with only brochure sites may struggle with yours. Skip agencies that can’t show a close match.
4. Not Checking Client Reviews
Many B2B buyers shortlist agencies on Clutch and DesignRush before they visit any agency site. Do the same, but read recent reviews, not only star ratings.
Look for details about deadlines, communication, and how the agency handled problems. A few detailed reviews beat many vague ones.
5. Overlooking Mobile
For small local businesses, most searches start on a phone. A desktop-first design can lose those visitors in seconds.
Test the agency’s own site on your phone first. Then ask how it tests mobile speed and layout on every build.
6. Having No Ongoing Support Plan
Startups often launch fast, then reshape the site as the product changes. Without a support plan, small fixes wait in line or cost extra.
Ask what is covered after launch, such as website maintenance, backups, and edits. Get response times and monthly costs in writing.
7. Assuming Every Listed Agency Is Local
Directories mix agencies based in town with firms that only serve the area. Both can do great work, but they work differently. Ask where the team sits and who will lead your project. Do not assume a local-sounding name means a local office.
8. Skipping Ownership Terms
Some companies end up with sites they cannot edit or move. Locked platforms and unclear contracts are usually the cause. Confirm in writing that you own the domain, content, and design files. Ask what happens to the site if you leave.
Finding the Right Web Design Agency for Your Needs
The best web design agencies in San Jose are not the same for every buyer. Start with your budget, then see which agencies fit it. A funded software company and a local dental office need very different partners.
Use the ranking as a filter, not a verdict. Read the profiles for the agencies that match your size and goals, then check their work.
The Our Take lines say when to pass as well as when to hire. For a wider view, see web design agencies in California.
Looking ahead, the strongest agencies here pair design with technical SEO, analytics, and conversion work. That mix will matter more as buyers expect a site to earn its keep.
At OneLittleWeb, we hope this list saves you the first round of research. If your search is wider, compare San Francisco web design agencies and Los Angeles web design agencies. Pick a short list, ask each for a quote, and compare how clearly each one explains its process.
How We Assess the Agencies on This List
Why This Ranking Is Different
Most agency roundups lean on opinion, self-reported claims, or paid placement. This ranking works differently. We use one repeatable scoring method for every agency, so the order comes from data, not preference.
The list mixes local, national, and offshore teams, so we say agencies serving San Jose, California. Location is not a ranking factor, and no agency earns extra points for being local. No agency paid for inclusion or a higher spot.
Only scored metrics decide the order. Service pages, portfolios, case studies, awards, and partnerships help us understand each agency.
Certifications, notable clients, local presence, technical skills, and media mentions shape the profiles. None of these add or remove points unless they match a weighted metric below.
Where Your Data Comes From
We collected the data on our own during 2026. SEMrush gave us estimated monthly website traffic. Because it is an estimate, we use traffic to compare agencies, not as an exact count.
Client ratings and review counts came from Clutch, DesignRush, G2, Google Business Profile, and Trustpilot. Glassdoor and Indeed gave us employee ratings and review counts. LinkedIn gave us each agency’s team size.
Agency websites and other public sources gave us services, pricing, and business history. Estimated hourly rates and minimum project sizes came from there too.
We also read service pages, portfolios, and case studies to confirm web design skills. Awards, partnerships, and client examples added context for the profiles.
Unless represented by one of the weighted metrics below, these qualitative findings do not affect the numerical score.
The Five Dimensions That Shape Your Rankings
Each agency is scored across five weighted areas. Positive categories add points, while pricing metrics apply deductions for higher cost barriers.
1. Web Design Focus & Value Assessment (20%)
This category measures how central web design is to an agency’s offering. It also shows how clients rate the value they received relative to cost.
| Metric | Weight | How We Calculated It |
| Web Design Focus | 10% | Web design appeared as a core agency service |
| Client Rating for Cost | 10% | Average cost/value rating from selected review platforms |
Agencies gain when web design is a big part of their business. They also gain when clients report strong value for money.
2. Brand Authority (45%)
Brand Authority measures an agency’s visibility, scale, and operating history.
| Metric | Weight | How We Calculated It |
| Website Traffic | 20% | Higher estimated SEMrush traffic contributed more points |
| LinkedIn Team Size | 15% | Larger teams contributed more points |
| Years in Business | 10% | Longer operating histories contributed more points |
These metrics work as signals of market presence, team capacity, and staying power. They do not mean larger agencies are always better.
3. Client Satisfaction (30%)
This category combines rating quality with review volume.
| Metric | Weight | How We Calculated It |
| Average Client Rating | 15% | Combined ratings from selected review platforms |
| Total Client Reviews | 15% | Greater review volume contributed more confidence to the score |
A high rating backed by many reviews carries more weight than the same rating from only a few. Review themes appear in each profile’s client review snapshot, not in the score.
4. Employee Satisfaction (25%)
Employee sentiment gives an extra signal about how stable a company is.
| Metric | Weight | How We Calculated It |
| Average Employee Rating | 10% | Average rating from Glassdoor and Indeed |
| Number of Employee Reviews | 15% | Greater review volume reduced the influence of very small samples |
Both the rating and the number of employee reviews matter. A strong score built on a few reviews tells us less than the same score built on many.
5. Cost Accessibility Adjustment (-20%)
This is the only category that subtracts points.
| Metric | Weight | How We Calculated It |
| Hourly Rate | -10% | Higher hourly rates received larger deductions |
| Minimum Project Cost | -10% | Higher entry costs reduced accessibility scores |
This does not mean expensive agencies deliver worse work. It only shows how easy each agency is to afford across a wider range of budgets. Together, the two deductions can reach 20 points.
How the Final Score Works
Each metric is normalized, weighted, and combined into a score out of 100.
Positive metrics contribute up to 120 points. A Cost Accessibility Adjustment can deduct up to 20 points based on hourly rate and minimum project cost.
No single metric decides an agency’s ranking. Larger agencies may gain from stronger traffic, team size, or longevity. Smaller agencies may excel in client satisfaction, employee sentiment, web design focus, value, or affordability.
Only the weighted metrics affect rankings. Awards, clients, partnerships, certifications, case studies, portfolio quality, local presence, and media mentions may appear in profiles.
Technical expertise and proprietary processes can appear there too. None of them change scores on their own.
This framework allows fair comparisons across agencies of different sizes, pricing models, and market positions.

Although individual metrics may change over time, the evaluation framework prioritizes long-term capability signals, making major ranking fluctuations unlikely.
