Track the world’s most-visited websites, industries, and monthly trends across 10K+ domains.
Here’s a number that might surprise you. In August 2025, ChatGPT was 32 times bigger than Claude by monthly web visits. By August 2026, it was only 5.5 times bigger.
That’s one of the biggest shifts we’ve tracked in the AI chatbot market. And if you follow tech news, you’ve probably seen the same question pop up again and again. Is anyone actually on track to catch ChatGPT?
Reading the headlines, you’d think the race is close. Claude and Gemini both passed 1 billion monthly web visits in 2026, and every new model launch brings a fresh round of “ChatGPT killer” talk.
But look at the raw numbers, and you get a calmer story. ChatGPT recorded 6.6B monthly web visits in August 2026. Claude and Gemini recorded 1.2B each.
So we decided to test it. We analyzed web visits for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and DeepSeek, from August 2025 to August 2026. Then we ran 250,000 simulated futures through April 2037 to see how the race could play out.
If you just want the short answer, here it is. ChatGPT stays on top in most of those futures. But in the scenario where a challenger does catch it, Claude is the one that gets there, and it happens in April 2037.
Here’s how we did it. We pulled monthly web visits for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek from August 2025 to August 2026. The data comes from OneLittleWeb’s Most Visited Websites dashboard, which uses estimates from Ahrefs and Semrush.
For the forecast, we modeled month-to-month changes in web visits and ran 250,000 simulations. Each simulation allows both gains and drops, the same way the real data moved. So when you see a crossover date in this study, read it as a modeled scenario, not a prediction.
If you want the full methodology and formulas, you’ll find them at the end.
Let’s start with where things stood a year ago. In August 2025, ChatGPT had 5.4B monthly web visits. No other chatbot in our study had more than 310M.
Fast forward to August 2026. ChatGPT had climbed to 6.6B, its highest month in our data. But Claude and Gemini had both reached 1.2B.
The visual below shows the whole race from Aug 25 to Aug 26 at a glance. You can see how quickly Claude and Gemini climbed while ChatGPT stayed far ahead.
Claude recorded the fastest growth of the five chatbots, rising from 167.8M to 1.2B monthly web visits, up 615.14% from Aug 25 to Aug 26.
If you want the exact numbers, the table below breaks it down month by month. Watch for the sudden spikes and the months where web visits dropped.

This is the pattern we’d most like you to notice, because it’s easy to miss.
If you only look at raw numbers, ChatGPT’s lead over Claude actually grew over the year. The gap went from 5.23B monthly web visits in August 2025 to 5.4B in August 2026.
Now look at market share, and you see a very different picture. The five chatbots together went from 6.31B to 9.56B monthly web visits, up 51.5%. Most of that new demand went to ChatGPT’s rivals.
August 2025 vs. August 2026
| Chatbot | Share of combined web visits, August 2025 | Share of combined web visits, August 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 85.6% | 69.1% | -16.5 pts |
| Claude | 2.7% | 12.6% | +9.9 pts |
| Gemini | 4.5% | 12.6% | +8.1 pts |
| DeepSeek | 4.8% | 3.5% | -1.3 pts |
| Grok | 2.5% | 2.3% | -0.2 pts |
Put Claude and Gemini together, and you get 2.4B monthly web visits, up from 450.6M. In August 2025, that was 8.3% of ChatGPT’s size. By August 2026, it was 36.4%.
ChatGPT’s share of combined web visits fell from 85.6% to 69.1%, even though its lead over Claude actually increased slightly from 5.23B to 5.4B monthly web visits.
So ChatGPT is still growing. The rest of the market is just growing faster.
Here’s how each chatbot changed from August 2025 to August 2026.
August 2025 vs. August 2026
| Chatbot | August 2025 | August 2026 | 12-month change | 12-month change (%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 5.4B | 6.6B | +1.2B | +22.22% |
| Claude | 167.8M | 1.2B | +1.03B | +615.14% |
| Gemini | 282.8M | 1.2B | +917.2M | +324.33% |
| Grok | 154.9M | 217.3M | +62.4M | +40.28% |
| DeepSeek | 303.8M | 339.1M | +35.3M | +11.62% |
The first thing you might notice is that ChatGPT added the most web visits in absolute terms. It gained 1.2B a month over the year, slightly more than Claude’s 1.03B. So its lead isn’t going anywhere overnight.
But Claude and Gemini grew much faster from smaller starting points. Claude rose 615.14%, and Gemini rose 324.33%.
Claude added 1.03B monthly web visits from Aug 25 to Aug 26, nearly matching ChatGPT’s 1.2B gain, despite starting from just 167.8M visits compared with ChatGPT’s 5.4B.
DeepSeek might surprise you. In August 2025, it was the second most visited chatbot in our group, ahead of both Gemini and Claude. By August 2026, it had dropped to fourth, with only 11.62% growth over the year.
Grok grew 40.28%, but at 217.3M monthly web visits, it is still the smallest of the five.
So if you’re asking who could realistically close the gap with ChatGPT, the data points to Claude and Gemini.
Claude grew the fastest over the full year. What should really catch your eye, though, is that it was still climbing at the end of the period.
Claude’s March 2026 surge was huge, but the growth did not stop there. From March to August 2026, its monthly web visits increased another 66.2%, from 722.2M to 1.2B.
To be fair, part of Claude’s growth came from one huge month. In March 2026, its web visits jumped 434.3M, or 150.85%. That single month accounts for 42% of Claude’s gain for the whole year.
But here’s the thing. Claude didn’t fall back after the spike. From March to August 2026, it grew another 66.2%, from 722.2M to 1.2B monthly web visits.
Gemini tells a different story over the same five months. It reached 1.1B in March 2026 and has moved between 1.1B and 1.2B since then. That is 9.1% growth from March to August 2026.
ChatGPT, meanwhile, is the most volatile of the three. It swung by as much as 1B in a single month, up 1B in March 2026 and down 1B in April 2026. It fell in five of the 12 months, yet still ended the period at its highest point.
So as we head into the forecast, keep this in mind. ChatGPT has the size and Claude has the momentum. The real test is whether that momentum can close a 5.4B gap.
So how long would it take Claude to close that 5.4B gap? The quick answer looks tempting.
Over the past year, Claude’s web visits grew by an average of 17.8% a month. ChatGPT’s grew by 1.7%. Keep both rates going, and Claude catches ChatGPT in about 12 months, around summer 2027.
If you simply extend the past year’s average growth rates, Claude could catch ChatGPT around 2027. But when the model includes realistic month-to-month rises, drops, and reversals, the representative crossover moves to April 2037.
That would make a great headline. But it only works if Claude repeats its best year, March spike included, again and again.
As you saw in the table, real web visits don’t move in straight lines. Claude fell in three of the 12 months, and ChatGPT fell in five.
Even if you use Claude’s slower growth since May 2026, about 6.7% a month, simple math still puts a crossover around 2029.
That’s why our model lands much later. It lets each month’s growth reverse as well as accelerate, based on how these chatbots actually behaved. That’s the difference between a 2027 headline and a 2037 scenario.
Now for the fun part. To show you what a Claude takeover would actually require, we picked one representative path where Claude catches ChatGPT. Every number in this section comes from that path, so think of it as a “what it would take” scenario, not the most likely future.
The visual below shows how that path plays out for all five chatbots, from September 2026 to April 2037.
In the modeled crossover scenario, ChatGPT’s lead first widens to about 5.88B monthly web visits in December 2026 before Claude begins closing the gap and eventually moves ahead in April 2037.
If you want to see every single month, the detailed table below has the full forecast.
That’s a lot of months to take in, so here’s a quick summary of the checkpoints you need.
August 2026 actual data and selected forecast dates through April 2037

| March 2037 | 13.94B | 12.90B | 11.23B | 824.3M | 630.9M | 1.04B |
| April 2037 | 12.82B | 12.90B | 11.41B | 810.1M | 592.6M | Claude is ahead by about 80M |
Those checkpoints show where all five chatbots end up. But the real story of this scenario is the gap between ChatGPT and Claude, and it doesn’t close in a straight line. The chart below tracks that gap month by month, from billions of monthly web visits behind to a narrow Claude lead in April 2037.
That change in the gap is easier to understand visually than from the checkpoint numbers alone. The chart traces how ChatGPT’s lead first expands, then gradually narrows, before Claude finally moves slightly ahead in the modeled April 2037 crossover scenario.
The chart gives you the shape. Here’s what’s happening at each stage.
Forecasted monthly web visits for ChatGPT and Claude in the representative crossover scenario through April 2037. This is a modeled scenario, not an exact prediction.
Here’s how the race unfolds in this scenario, one milestone at a time. Keep an eye on ChatGPT’s lead over Claude, because it doesn’t shrink the way you might expect.
In August 2026, ChatGPT leads Claude by 5.4B monthly web visits. In October, Claude passes Gemini and stays ahead of it for almost the whole forecast. But ChatGPT’s lead actually grows, peaking at 5.88B in December 2026.
By August 2027, the lead is down to 5.18B. Claude is at 2.29B monthly web visits, and ChatGPT is at 7.47B. A year later, in August 2028, the lead is 4.64B.
In January 2030, Claude and Gemini combined to pass ChatGPT for the first time. But ChatGPT’s lead over Claude barely moves. It’s 4.39B in August 2030 and still 4.39B in August 2032.
This is where things change fast. Between August 2032 and August 2033, the lead drops from 4.39B to 1.70B. Claude passes 10B monthly web visits in August 2034. ChatGPT keeps growing too, and peaks at 14.91B in September 2035.
In December 2036, ChatGPT’s lead falls below 1B for the first time, to 930M. By February 2037, Claude is within 170M. Then ChatGPT pulls away again in March 2037, leading by 1.04B.
ChatGPT drops 1.12B in a single month, and Claude moves ahead by about 80M monthly web visits.
Here’s how we’d sum it up. ChatGPT’s biggest advantage is scale. After a year of rapid growth from its rivals, it’s still billions of monthly web visits ahead.
Claude’s advantage is momentum. In one year, it went from about 3% of ChatGPT’s size to about 18%. That growth is strong enough that our model can at least find a path where Claude catches up.
Gemini sits in between. It matched Claude at 1.2B monthly web visits in August 2026, but its growth has been flat since March 2026.
If you ask us, the bigger story is the market itself. ChatGPT’s share of the group fell 16.5 points in a single year. Even in the many futures where ChatGPT stays No. 1, it’s likely to lead a much more crowded top tier.
So, can anyone catch ChatGPT?
Based on our forecast, it’s possible, and Claude is the one most likely to do it. In our crossover scenario, Claude edges past ChatGPT in April 2037, with 12.90B monthly web visits against ChatGPT’s 12.82B.
Gemini won’t be far behind either. It climbs to 11.41B monthly web visits by April 2037, about 1.41B short of ChatGPT. That turns today’s one-horse race into a real three-way fight at the top.
Just keep in mind it’s a long road. ChatGPT’s lead barely shrinks for the first six years, and the crossover depends on Claude keeping up its momentum for more than a decade. The shift in market share is already real, though. ChatGPT’s share of web visits across the five chatbots fell from 85.6% to 69.1% in one year, and Claude is the main reason.
For now, ChatGPT is still No. 1. But if you’re watching for who could take the top spot by 2037, keep your eyes on Claude, with Gemini right behind it.
We analyzed monthly web visits for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and DeepSeek from August 2025 through August 2026. The data was sourced from OneLittleWeb’s Most Visited Websites data dashboard, with web visit estimates gathered by OneLittleWeb.com from Ahrefs and Semrush.
Source: https://onelittleweb.com/digital-market-intelligence/popular-websites/
Web visits moved up and down sharply from month to month. So instead of applying one fixed growth rate, we modeled the monthly changes themselves.
We used a first-order autoregressive model, or AR(1). This lets one month’s change in web visits influence the next month’s change. We then resampled the historical “shocks”, the part of each month’s change the model could not explain, and ran 250,000 Monte Carlo simulations through April 2037.
The five chatbots’ shocks were sampled together, month by month. This preserves some of the way they moved together in the historical data.
A crossover was recorded in any month where a challenger’s monthly web visits were equal to or greater than ChatGPT’s.
The April 2037 result is one representative path in which Claude catches ChatGPT. It shows what a Claude crossover could look like under the modeled conditions. It is not an unconditional prediction.
Monthly change in web visits:
\Delta y_t = y_t – y_{t-1}
AR(1) model of monthly change:
\Delta y_t = a + \phi \, \Delta y_{t-1} + \varepsilon_t
Where a is the underlying monthly change, φ is how much the previous month’s change carries into the next month, and ε is the unexpected shock in that month.
Projected web visits:
y_t = y_{t-1} + \Delta y_t
Month-over-month percentage change:
\text{MoM\%}_t = \frac{\Delta y_t}{y_{t-1}} \times 100
Residual shock:
\varepsilon_t = \Delta y_t – \left(a + \phi \, \Delta y_{t-1}\right)
Crossover condition:
y_{\text{challenger},t} \geq y_{\text{ChatGPT},t}
In plain terms, the model asks one simple question. Given how these chatbots have moved from month to month, what future paths are plausible?
This study uses historical data only from Aug 2025 to Aug 2026. Uncertainty grows the further the forecast goes, so keep that in mind when you read anything about 2037.
Ahrefs and Semrush provide estimated web visits, not total product usage. App usage and API activity are not included.
Monthly web visits above 1 billion are rounded to one decimal place in our source data, for example, 1.2B. Percentage changes for those months are approximate.
The model assumes past behavior in web visits is a useful guide to future movement. Major launches, pricing changes, regulation, or new competitors could change the trajectory a lot.
Most importantly, the April 2037 crossover is a modeled scenario, not a prediction. It shows how Claude could catch ChatGPT, not that it will.
