One agency lists a package price. Another bill by the hour, and a third won’t say. The field is also wiYou have plenty of web design agencies in Halifax to choose from. That sounds like good news, until the quotes arrive.
der than it looks.
Local studios compete with remote teams from across Canada, and both claim to know your market. A homepage alone can’t show you which claim holds up.
You probably worry about paying too much for a site you can’t update. That worry is fair, because a weak pick can mean a costly redo.
So I evaluated 17 agencies with public data from Clutch, DesignRush, G2, Glassdoor, Indeed, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, Trustpilot, and SEMrush. Every agency below is scored the same way, so you can compare them fairly.
You can start with the top few, then check how each one fits your budget and project.

Deep Dive: Inside Each Web Design Agency
Each profile shows what the agency does well and where a ranking can’t tell you the full story. The methodology and scoring system comes later in the content.
1. Thrive Internet Marketing Agency — Best if you want one large team to run your website, SEO, and ads together

- Website: thriveagency.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.53 (267 reviews)
- Team Size: 216 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 21
- Monthly Website Visits: 660,597
- Employee Review Score: 4.70 (258 reviews)
Overview
Thrive is a full marketing shop that treats web design as one service among many. I see it as a large bench of specialists. That bench covers SEO, paid ads, content, video, and online stores.
Its work leans toward local service businesses. Healthcare, legal, and home service brands show up often. For many of them, the website is only the first piece.
Thrive says it uses no long-term contracts. Its own pages also tell you to check whether a quote covers more than design. I would take that advice with any agency on this list.
The agency has appeared on the Inc. 5000 list of fast-growing companies year after year. That points to steady demand, and it fits a firm of this size.
If you want a site and a full marketing plan from one team, Thrive fits. If you only need a simple site, you would pay for more than you use.
Core Services
- Custom and WordPress web design, including Shopify stores
- SEO, including local, technical, and AI search work
- Paid search and social advertising
- Content, video, and photography
- Reputation and review management
Why They Rank #1
- Traffic is the widest gap on this list. Thrive draws over 100 times the visits of the next agency. That shows how far its own marketing reaches.
- The team is the largest here. A site build and a campaign can run side by side.
- Web design is a small part of what Thrive sells, among the lowest on this list. You are hiring a marketing team that builds sites, not a design specialist.
- Its client rating and its value-for-cost score both sit near the bottom of this list. The review pool is the largest here, so those read as real averages, not thin samples.
- Thrive wins on scale and review depth, not on design focus or value.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Communication dominates the praise, from responsive account managers to deadlines met. Concerns are scattered: lead quality, and a team that needed coaching on a niche industry. One reviewer described a bad ad-spend experience, which stands out against the rest.
Our Take
Pick Thrive if you run a service business that wants a site, SEO, and ads under one roof. Plan for a larger partner. Skip it if you want a design-led studio for a single site.
2. Websites.ca Web Design — Best if you want a simple WordPress site with hosting and updates handled for you

- Website: websites.ca
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.33 (187 reviews)
- Team Size: 8 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 27
- Monthly Website Visits: 33
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
Websites.ca keeps things simple. It sells one bundle that covers the design, hosting, domain, email, and updates for a flat monthly fee. You don’t piece the parts together yourself.
Everything runs on WordPress, hosted on its own managed setup. That keeps the stack small and the support path short. If something breaks, one team owns the fix.
Its clients are mostly small businesses, professionals, and nonprofits. These are teams without a developer who still need a site that stays current. I think that is where the bundle works best.
The company says it does not outsource work or support overseas. For some buyers, that is a real selling point.
It is a lean operation, so large custom builds and big marketing plans sit outside its sweet spot. If you want a simple site that someone else looks after, it fits well.
Core Services
- Custom, mobile-friendly WordPress web design
- Managed WordPress hosting with security and backups
- Domain registration and business email
- Google Business Profile setup and traffic reporting
- Ongoing updates and support
Why They Rank #2
- Web design is the core of this business. Its focus is the highest on this list by a wide margin. That depth lifts it this far.
- Its operating history ties for the longest here. It has stayed in business through several shifts in how websites get built.
- The hourly rate sits in the lower range of this list. Budgets stretch further here than at most agencies ranked near it.
- Reach keeps it from a higher spot. A team of eight and tiny site traffic mean less capacity and visibility than the agencies above it.
- Its client rating is the lowest on this list. The third-largest review pool means that score is not a fluke.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Public review details are thin. The few reviews I could read praise value for the price and efficient work. One reviewer felt the sales pitch promised more than the service delivered.
Our Take
Choose it if you run a small business or nonprofit. It suits anyone who wants a simple WordPress site kept up for them. Look elsewhere if you need a custom build, heavy SEO, or a large online store.
3. Candybox Marketing — Best if you want site design planned together with branding and search

- Website: candyboxmarketing.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.90 (99 reviews)
- Team Size: 100 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 18
- Monthly Website Visits: 1,049
- Employee Review Score: 4.75 (12 reviews)
Overview
Candybox treats a website as a growth tool, not a standalone design job. It plans the site together with the brand, the copy, and the search strategy. That link is the main reason I would shortlist it.
It builds on WordPress and trains clients to manage their own content. Clients also own the finished site and its assets. That matters if you ever change agencies.
The agency says most of its clients stay for years. That fits how it works, since site design leads into branding, search, and ads.
The Globe and Mail has named it to its list of top growing companies several times. It also holds a seat on the Forbes Agency Council.
It is a marketing agency first, so design alone is a smaller part of what it sells. If you want a site tied to branding and SEO, it fits. If you only need a quick build, look elsewhere.
Core Services
- Website UX and design on custom WordPress
- Branding and creative
- SEO and AI search optimization
- Digital advertising and social media
- Marketing automation and reporting
Why They Rank #3
- The team is the third largest here. It can staff a site build and a campaign together.
- Its employee rating is the third highest here. A dozen reviews make it a small sample.
- Web design is a modest slice of its mix. That keeps it below Websites.ca, which does little else.
- Clients rate its value for cost in the middle of this list. That is fair for a wider service mix.
- Its hourly rate sits at the top of this list, tied with several others. Strong ratings and a big team come at a premium.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Praise centers on fast, responsive handling and a hand-over that leaves owners comfortable editing their own WordPress site. Value is the weak spot. One buyer felt a template-style build cost too much, and another issue dragged on for months.
Our Take
Choose Candybox if you are a growing business that wants branding, a WordPress site, and SEO planned together. Pass if you need a low-cost build or a design specialist. The premium rates will not pay off.
4. Marvel Marketing — Best if you run a home service business and want a site built to bring in calls

- Website: marvelmarketing.ca
- Minimum Project Cost: $5,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.95 (138 reviews)
- Team Size: 12 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 12
- Monthly Website Visits: 1,614
- Employee Review Score: 5.00 (1 review)
Overview
Marvel Marketing builds its work around one customer type, the home service trades. Think HVAC, plumbing, roofing, and cleaning companies. Its websites exist to bring in calls and quote requests, not just to look good.
Ryan McRae founded the agency after working in the trades himself. I read that as a sign it speaks the language of owners who run crews, not marketing teams.
Its case studies show leads and bookings rising for clients like Wild Mountain RV and DiamondCut Roofing. These results are self-reported, so treat them as claims to ask about.
It also limits how many clients it takes on. The agency says this keeps senior people close to each account. Ask who actually does the work.
If you are a contractor who wants leads, it is a natural fit. If you run an online store or a nonprofit, its trade focus will not help you.
Core Services
- Website design for service businesses
- Local SEO and Google Business Profile management
- Google Ads and Local Service Ads
- Meta Ads on Facebook and Instagram
- AI search optimization and connected TV ads
Why They Rank #4
- Its client rating is among the highest here, and the fourth-largest review pool backs it up.
- Clients rate its value for cost in the upper half of this list. That helps at a higher price.
- Its entry price is higher than most agencies near it, so smaller budgets may not fit.
- Capacity keeps it from climbing. A team of 12 means less room for parallel work than Candybox or Thrive.
- A perfect employee score rests on a single review, so it tells you almost nothing.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Complaints are small and rare. A few launch bugs were fixed fast, and one project ran late over an integration. The praise centers on replies within the hour and well-organized work. Some clients also credit better rankings and traffic.
Our Take
Hire Marvel if you run a trade business and want a site tied to ads and local search. Skip it if you work outside the trades or need a big team for a complex build.
5. DD.NYC® — Best if you want a design-led studio for branding, packaging, and a polished site

- Website: dd.nyc
- Minimum Project Cost: $10,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.93 (197 reviews)
- Team Size: 39 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 11
- Monthly Website Visits: 5,490
- Employee Review Score: 4.20 (16 reviews)
Overview
DD.NYC works like a creative studio that happens to build websites. Branding, packaging, graphic design, and video sit next to its web work. Clients often get one look across all of them.
Its client list leans big. Public work includes projects tied to the FIFA World Cup 2026 and Match Group. It also serves real estate, healthcare, consumer brands, and nonprofits.
Awards back up the creative focus. The agency lists Anthem Award wins, Webby nominations, and Clutch Global recognition. It has also appeared on the Inc. 5000 list in back-to-back years.
Its process starts with a discovery call, then moves to scope, timeline, and cost before design begins. That order helps you see the budget early.
It suits teams that care about brand as much as the site. If you just need a quick WordPress build, you will pay for polish you may not use.
Core Services
- Web design and development, including e-commerce and UI/UX
- Branding and brand guidelines
- Packaging design
- Graphic design for print and digital
- Video production and motion graphics
Why They Rank #5
- Its entry price is the third highest on this list. Its hourly rate sits at the top. Smaller budgets will feel that.
- Web design is a large share of its work, near the top tier of focus here. Site work is not a side line here.
- Price and depth keep it from a higher spot. Marvel and Candybox ask less up front, and a team of 39 trails Candybox and Thrive. Its history is also shorter than every agency above it.
- The employee rating is the lowest among the top five, resting on a modest sample.
- Clients still rate its value for cost in the upper half of this list. The premium has not hurt satisfaction.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Timely delivery leads to praise, then creative work and a quick grasp of a client’s vision. The weak points are communication when your main contact is away and pushback on change requests. One e-commerce project also went badly off track.
Our Take
Choose DD.NYC if you want branding, packaging, and a site designed together. You will need the budget for it. Skip it if you need a low-cost site or a store-heavy build, where one reviewer reported serious trouble.
6. BACKBONE — Best if you want a website tied into a wider platform and AI tools

- Website: backbone.digital
- Minimum Project Cost: $5,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.60 (8 reviews)
- Team Size: 125 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 27
- Monthly Website Visits: 49
- Employee Review Score: 3.60 (12 reviews)
Overview
BACKBONE sells digital transformation, and the website is one piece of it. At the center sits Expresia, its own digital experience platform. It also offers an AI-driven site builder called Xia and a quick-launch product called RapidSite.
That platform focus shapes how it works. It connects sites, customer data, and automation. The website joins the rest of the business.
Its client list spans mining, insurance, energy, hospitality, and education. That breadth suggests it handles larger, more complex organizations more often than small shops.
It lists case studies for companies such as Pierce and ALBA. I would ask for the numbers behind each one before you sign.
If you want a website that plugs into a larger digital system, it fits. If you only need a clean brochure site, this is likely more than you need.
Core Services
- Custom websites and customer experience projects
- Expresia digital experience platform
- E-commerce and content management
- AI strategy and custom AI agents
- Maintenance plans and dedicated support teams
Why They Rank #6
- Its history ties for the longest on this list. Few agencies here have lasted through as many shifts in web technology.
- The LinkedIn team is the second largest here. That gives it room to run a platform build and support work at the same time.
- Web design is a small part of what BACKBONE sells, in the lower tier here. Expect a platform and transformation pitch, not a design-only one.
- Its client rating is among the lowest here, and one of the thinnest review pools backs it. That keeps it from climbing.
- Clients also rate its value for cost near the bottom of this list. Long history and a big team are held back by thin, middling client feedback.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Two older reviews drag the average, citing staff turnover and weak design depth. Recent ones are uniformly strong. Technical skill and meeting deadlines draw the praise. Documentation gaps between deliverables come up more than once.
Our Take
Choose BACKBONE if you run a larger business. It suits a website tied into a platform, automation, and AI tools. Avoid it for a simple design project, or if you need a stable day-to-day contact.
7. Adchitects — Best if you want a product-style design and build team with ongoing support

- Website: adchitects.co
- Minimum Project Cost: $10,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.80 (77 reviews)
- Team Size: 35 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 10
- Monthly Website Visits: 2,082
- Employee Review Score: 3.80 (4 reviews)
Overview
Adchitects works like a product studio that also builds websites. Its process runs from research and design through development to ongoing maintenance. One team can carry a project from first idea to long-term upkeep.
It says it uses full-time staff, with no freelancers or subcontractors. Each client also gets a dedicated project manager. I like that setup, because it puts one person in charge of the thread.
Named work includes Armitron, The Explorers Club, and Lantern. Its sites also cover SaaS, retail, nonprofit, and healthcare brands, with HubSpot and headless builds as common choices.
It has also added search work for AI engines to its maintenance menu. That is a sign it keeps pace with how people search.
It suits teams that want a long relationship, not a one-off launch. If you need a small, fast, low-cost site, its entry price will feel heavy.
Core Services
- UX and UI design and website design
- HubSpot and headless website builds
- Shopify and e-commerce development
- Conversion, SEO, and AI search optimization
- Ongoing maintenance and development retainers
Why They Rank #7
- Only Thrive and DD.NYC draw more site visits. That is a strong reach for a team of this size.
- Web design is a big part of its work, in the top tier of focus here. Its hourly rate is among the lower ones, which is a rare pairing near the top.
- Its entry price is among the highest here. Its client rating sits in the lower half. Together they keep it from climbing.
- Its history ties for the second shortest among the top ten.
- Strong reach and design focus, held back by price and middling ratings.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
The friction is design-phase timing and thin in-house capacity. One reviewer noted outside freelancers, which sits oddly with its stated policy. Otherwise project management, deadlines, and communication lead a warm review set.
Our Take
Hire Adchitects for a larger site or product that needs research, design, build, and upkeep from one team. You need the budget for it. Skip it for a quick, low-cost brochure site.
8. True Market — Best if you want a data-informed website built for speed and search

- Website: truemarket.ca
- Minimum Project Cost: $5,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.90 (63 reviews)
- Team Size: 8 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 11
- Monthly Website Visits: 21
- Employee Review Score: 5.00 (1 review)
Overview
True Market treats a website as a business tool that needs a plan before a design. Its pages say the biggest return comes from data and planning. Its process starts with benchmarking and a strategy review.
Design and build follow that review. Hosting and a content delivery network come in the same package. That puts speed and uptime under one team, not a separate vendor.
Its showcase is light. A site for Aperian leads the homepage, and the only named testimonial comes from the Tsuut’ina Nation. I would ask to see more recent work.
It is a small team. That usually means fewer layers between you and the people doing the work. It fits a business that wants a fast, search-ready site with a clear plan behind it. If you need a long list of named, recent projects, ask for more proof first.
Core Services
- Website design
- Website development
- Brand development
- Hosting and CDN
- Benchmarking and strategic review
Why They Rank #8
- Its client rating sits in the upper half. The review pool is larger than most agencies near it. That makes the score hard to dismiss.
- Web design is a big part of its business, in the upper half of focus on this list. Clients rate its value for cost in the middle.
- A perfect employee score rests on a single review, so it adds almost nothing.
- Reach holds it back. A team of eight and very low traffic mean less capacity and visibility than Adchitects, ranked just above.
- A solid score on real reviews, held back by a small team and low reach.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Quality and design come first. Clients call the work detail-oriented and good at drawing out what a business needs. The concerns are about structure: a few wanted a written schedule or a project tool. The budget crept up on one project, though that client still rated the cost highly.
Our Take
Choose True Market if you want a search-friendly site planned around data. It suits buyers who like talking to the people who build it. Look elsewhere for large teams, big e-commerce builds, or a deep public portfolio.
9. Digia — Best if you want a small software team for a custom website or app at a low entry price

- Website: digia.co
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.90 (10 reviews)
- Team Size: 9 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 10
- Monthly Website Visits: N/A
- Employee Review Score: 4.00 (2 reviews)
Overview
Digia is a software development company first. Websites and UI and UX design sit next to custom software on its service list. Its homepage calls it a full-cycle software shop.
The team includes project managers, designers, developers, and a QA tester. Its About page lists a set of values built around clear communication and long-term relationships.
Its site shows review badges from Clutch and GoodFirms. That gives you a fair way to check its record before you sign.
The site shares few project details or process steps. Named clients and case studies are hard to find, so ask for examples that match your project.
It fits a team that wants a custom site or app with direct access to developers. If you want a marketing-led agency, look elsewhere.
Core Services
- Website development
- E-commerce solutions
- UI and UX design
- Custom software development
- AI-assisted software development
Why They Rank #9
- Its hourly rate is the lowest on this list, tied with ZeroHero Tech. The entry price also sits at the floor, so it is among the cheapest ways in.
- Clients rate its value for cost at the top of this list, which fits a low price.
- Web design is a small part of what it sells, in the lower tier of focus here. Expect a software pitch.
- Only ten client reviews back its rating, one of the thinner pools here. A strong score on a small sample is less proof than the same score at Marvel Marketing.
- Cheap to start, top marks on value, thin on proof.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Communication stands out, with daily Slack updates and weekly demos. Concerns are one-offs. Non-technical clients wanted better onboarding, documentation came late, and one project’s changes broke existing features. One reviewer also noted the company is young and may struggle to scale a larger team.
Our Take
Choose Digia if you need a custom site or app from a small development team. Its entry price is low. Pass if you need a large team, heavy SEO, or a brand-led agency.
10. Vandy Digital Marketing — Best if you want a small team that pairs your website with ads, SEO, and email

- Website: vandymarketing.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $5,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 5.00 (36 reviews)
- Team Size: 3 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 4
- Monthly Website Visits: 27
- Employee Review Score: 3.10 (17 reviews)
Overview
Vandy takes a hands-on, partnership approach to digital work. It says it builds personalized strategies instead of selling one package to everyone.
Mike van der Poel leads the agency as owner and digital marketing lead. He works with a small team of marketing specialists and a videographer.
Web design is one of several services, next to SEO, paid ads, social media, and email campaigns. It also sets up payment gateways for online stores, and it works with partners on payments and video.
Its site names no clients and posts no prices. It points visitors to a free discovery call, so ask for relevant examples on that call.
It fits a small business that wants one team for the site and the marketing around it. If you need deep engineering or a large bench, look at the bigger names above.
Core Services
- Web design and development
- Search engine optimization
- Social media management
- Pay-per-click advertising
- Email marketing and payment gateway setup
Why They Rank #10
- A perfect client rating ties for the top here. Only a modest review pool backs it. That proves less than the same score at Marvel Marketing.
- Clients rate its value for cost at the top of the list too. Web design is a big share of its work.
- A tiny team and the shortest history in the top ten keep it out of the upper tier.
- Its employee rating is the lowest in the top ten. The second-largest employee review pool on this list makes that a real signal, not noise.
- Perfect marks from clients, held back by a tiny team and a weak employee score.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Timeliness and tailored work lead, which cost the highest-rated area. Reviewers mention hands-on WordPress coaching and AI features built into web projects. The one softer score cites a slowed schedule, which the reviewer partly blamed on the client.
Our Take
Choose Vandy if you run a small business. It suits a site, ads, and email handled by one close-knit team. Skip it if you need a large bench or complex software, since the team is tiny.
11. ZeroHero Tech — Best if you want a brand-led studio to design your identity and your site together

- Website: zeroherotech.ca
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 5.00 (9 reviews)
- Team Size: 3 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 8
- Monthly Website Visits: N/A
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
ZeroHero is a branding studio that builds websites as part of the identity work. It lists brand identity, art direction, motion, and design systems next to UI and UX design.
Its development side runs on WordPress, with custom builds and e-commerce available. It also covers SEO and Google Ads, so launch and early visibility can stay with one team.
Named work leans toward local food and home businesses, such as Euro Pizza and Nayya Pizza & Grill. It also lists healthcare and SaaS among its industries.
The studio describes its process as a tree. Roots set the goals and the trunk shapes the structure. The canopy joins design and code, and the bloom is launch and growth.
It is a small team, so you will likely work with the same few people. If you want a logo and a site that matches, it fits. If you need a large team for a complex build, look elsewhere.
Core Services
- Brand identity and art direction
- Website UI and UX design
- WordPress and custom web development
- E-commerce solutions
- SEO and Google Ads
Why They Rank #11
- Web design is a large share of its work, with the fifth-highest focus on this list. That depth puts it ahead of agencies with more reviews.
- Clients rate its value for cost at the top of this list. Its hourly rate is the joint lowest. Budgets go a long way here.
- Nine reviews are too few to carry a perfect rating. The same score at Marvel Marketing rests on far more evidence.
- A team of three and a short history keep it out of the top ten.
- Great value and focus, held back by thin proof and a very small team.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Reviews are few, so treat them as hints. Clients like the creative ideas, smooth communication, and a search jump from page three to page one. The complaints are slow change requests, partly from a server issue. A construction client also waited months for calls.
Our Take
Choose ZeroHero if you run a small local business. It suits a brand and a WordPress site from one studio. Skip it if you want a big team, a long review record, or an enterprise build.
12. Outstanding Experience — Best if you run a Shopify Plus store and need a migration or ongoing engineering

- Website: ouxp.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 5.00 (17 reviews)
- Team Size: 1 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 15
- Monthly Website Visits: 2
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
Outstanding Experience, or OUXP, is a Shopify Plus specialist. It does not pitch general web design. Its work is migrations, theme changes, integrations, and engineering for larger online stores.
It has been a Shopify Plus partner for several years. That status means it works inside Shopify’s own program for bigger merchants.
Clients come from fashion, beauty, wellness, industrial, and business-to-business brands. Many arrive from Magento, WooCommerce, or BigCommerce. The agency maps URLs before any move to protect search rankings.
It publishes price ranges and retainer tiers, which helps you budget. Nothing goes live without client approval, and it hands over code and documentation at the end.
It fits a growing store that needs engineers more than a visual rebrand. If you need a brochure site or a logo, it is the wrong shop.
Core Services
- Shopify Plus migrations
- Theme customization and headless builds
- Integrations with ERP, CRM, and shipping tools
- Conversion and performance optimization
- Retainers and emergency support
Why They Rank #12
- Its history is the sixth longest on this list. That is more track record than most agencies ranked near it.
- Web design is a very small part of its business, among the lowest focus here. It sells Shopify engineering, not design.
- A one-person LinkedIn presence is the smallest on this list, and site traffic is among the lowest. That makes its capacity hard to judge.
- A perfect client rating ties for the top here. Seventeen reviews is still a small pool.
- Perfect ratings and a long record, with a tiny footprint and little design focus.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
The steady complaint is visibility. Clients wanted more frequent progress updates during development and a walkthrough of finished work. Praise centers on early delivery and Shopify skill, including clever fixes for platform limits.
Our Take
Choose OUXP if you run a growing Shopify Plus store that needs a migration or a dedicated engineer. Skip it if you want a design-led brand refresh or a simple brochure site.
13. WBC Designs — Best if you want a monthly website plan with design, hosting, and updates from one team

- Website: wbcdesigns.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.68 (52 reviews)
- Team Size: 5 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 18
- Monthly Website Visits: 362
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
WBC Designs sells websites the way many people buy phone plans. You pay a monthly package, with design, hosting, and updates folded in and no setup fee. Custom builds are available when you need more control.
Craig Steinberg leads the business as CEO and lead designer. He runs the free consultation himself, so you talk to the person who shapes the work.
Its portfolio leans toward solo entrepreneurs and small firms. Named projects include Alphi Apparel, Heart & Home Realty, and The Dream Analyst. Its own site says some clients have stayed for a decade or longer.
The agency also lists awards, including Corporate Vision and Canadian Choice wins. These are self-reported, so check who runs each program.
It suits a small business that wants one team for the site, brand, and search. If you need a large engineering team, it is not built for that.
Core Services
- Monthly website packages and custom builds
- Web hosting and domain registration
- Branding and logo design
- SEO, AI search, and social media
- Cybersecurity and IT support
Why They Rank #13
- Traffic is its strongest field, sixth on this list. It sits ahead of BACKBONE and True Market despite a small team.
- Its history is the fourth longest, tied with Candybox. That fits a business built on long client relationships.
- Clients rate value for cost in the upper half of this list. Its hourly rate is still tied for the highest. Ask which plan you are quoted.
- Its client rating is among the lowest here. That, plus a team of five, keeps it from moving up.
- Strong reach and a long record, held back by a lower client rating and top-end hourly rates.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Reviews are close to perfect, so the story is in the details. Clients single out fast replies and tasks shared before due dates. They also note patience with people who are not comfortable with technology. The only issue named is a small site glitch fixed the same day.
Our Take
Choose WBC Designs if you are a small business or solo professional. It suits a monthly plan with one team for site and marketing. Skip it if you need a large team or a complex custom platform.
14. Prabbis Consulting — Best if you need a software and cloud team that can also build your website

- Website: prabbis.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.77 (7 reviews)
- Team Size: 3 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 5
- Monthly Website Visits: N/A
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
Prabbis Consulting is an engineering firm first. Its site groups the work into software, cloud, AI and automation, and marketing. Web design sits inside the software side, next to apps, APIs, and UI and UX.
Its tagline is “We Build It. You Own It.” That points to client ownership of the finished work. Ask how handover works in practice.
Portfolio items include Iyel, Proen, Origin Reporting, and Theranib. The projects mix Shopify stores, website design, and web apps.
It also offers AI agents and workflow automation. That is a wider scope than a typical design agency.
It fits a company that needs a site tied to software or cloud work. If you want a design-led brand studio, this is a different kind of shop.
Core Services
- Website development and UI and UX design
- E-commerce development
- Web and mobile apps and APIs
- Cloud, DevOps, and migration
- AI agents and workflow automation
Why They Rank #14
- Its hourly rate is in the lower range of this list. The entry price sits at the floor. Cost is not the barrier here.
- Clients rate its value for cost at the top of this list. That is the strongest sign in its record.
- Web design is a modest part of its mix, in the middle of this list for focus.
- Only seven reviews back a client rating in the lower half of this list. That is the second-thinnest pool here, so the score says little.
- A cheap, engineering-led option with thin evidence behind it.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Public reviews are very thin. The one I could read praises solid execution and on-time delivery. It also notes responsive communication, with no criticism. That is a single client, so it shows little pattern.
Our Take
Choose Prabbis if you need a website tied to an app, cloud, or automation project. It helps keep costs down. Skip it if you want a design-led studio or a deep, public track record.
15. The Visitor Creations — Best if you want senior-level brand and web work on a small scale

- Website: thevisitor.ca
- Minimum Project Cost: $1,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 5.00 (6 reviews)
- Team Size: 2 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 2
- Monthly Website Visits: 14
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
The Visitor, as its site calls itself, works as a small creative studio. It says only senior people touch each project, and it carries no hiring overhead.
Web design is built in code, with a CMS so you can edit your own pages. Builds are meant to be fast, responsive, and ready for search.
Named clients span automotive, accounting, construction, property, and charity work. Testimonials on its site come from names such as Hyatt Hotels.
It also sells branding, packaging, video, and advertising. It scopes each project to fit. After a short intro call, you get a one-page scope with a cost and delivery date.
It suits a small business that wants experienced hands on a brand and a site. If you need a big team or round-the-clock support, it will feel thin.
Core Services
- Custom web design and build with a CMS
- Brand identity and naming
- Packaging and product design
- Video and motion
- Advertising campaigns
Why They Rank #15
- A perfect client rating rests on the smallest review pool on this list. It proves little next to Marvel Marketing’s.
- Clients rate its value for cost at the top of this list. Web design is a mid-sized share of its work.
- Its hourly rate lands mid-list, above the cheapest agencies and below the premium ones.
- The shortest history on this list and a two-person team set its ceiling. Traffic is also low.
- Top marks on value, held back by how little evidence and capacity stand behind them.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Evidence is slim. One reviewer calls it skilled at building brands, at a low cost with one dedicated team member. The other praises a modern redesign, regular updates, and on-time work. Neither raised a complaint.
Our Take
Choose The Visitor Creations for a small brand and website project. It suits buyers who want senior attention and a clear one-page scope. Skip it for large builds or ongoing, high-volume support.
16. Takt — Best if you want brand strategy and website work from one award-focused agency

- Website: takt.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $25,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.85 (51 reviews)
- Team Size: 39 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 14
- Monthly Website Visits: 112
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
Takt treats brand and digital as one job. Its service list runs from brand strategy and identity to web design, product validation, and campaigns. The website is one part of a larger brand build.
Its case studies name the NHL Players’ Association, NYU Casa Italiana, and Primasun. They show work for sport, universities, and consumer brands.
Its industry list also covers healthcare, education, finance, and SaaS. That range suggests it adapts its approach to complex fields.
Awards are a clear selling point. Its pages mention Webby wins and nominations, and one site is called multi-award winning. These are self-reported, so check which program gave each one.
It fits a team that wants strategy and design before the build, and has a budget to match. If you want a fast, low-cost site, its entry price is a poor match.
Core Services
- Brand strategy and identity
- Web design and development
- UX and product validation
- Marketing campaigns
- Branded content
Why They Rank #16
- The team is the fourth largest on this list, tied with DD.NYC. That gives it room for strategy, design, and development in parallel.
- Its history and its traffic both land seventh on this list. Reach is steady, not standout.
- It carries the highest entry price here, tied with R&G Strategic, plus a top-tier hourly rate. That narrows who can hire it.
- Its client rating sits in the lower half, and value for cost lands mid-list. Next to the highest prices, that holds it back.
- Real capacity and a long record, with premium prices and middling ratings.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Clients call the team an extension of their own staff, and on-time delivery draws the most praise. The soft spot is after launch. Reviewers asked for more reliable technical support, and one noticed senior people swapped out without warning.
Our Take
Choose Takt if you are funding a brand and website together and want strategy first. Skip it if you need a quick, low-cost build, or if dependable help after launch matters to you.
17. R&G Strategic — Best if you run a sustainability or impact organization and want a website that tells that story

- Website: rgstrategic.com
- Minimum Project Cost: $25,000 CAD
- Average Client Satisfaction Rating: 4.95 (59 reviews)
- Team Size: 11 (LinkedIn)
- Years in Business: 9
- Monthly Website Visits: 13
- Employee Review Score: N/A
Overview
R&G Strategic calls itself a sustainability agency, and web design is a small piece of that offer. Its work blends marketing, communications, and consulting for organizations that want to show their impact.
On the creative side, it lists website design next to branding, graphic design, and eco-friendly packaging. On the sustainability side, it covers ESG reporting, materiality work, and campaigns.
Named clients include FieldTurf, TD Bank, SolarAssist, and Sustane. Its logos also span sport, banking, solar, waste, and ports.
It backs its focus with credentials. It is B Corp certified, a certified women-owned supplier, and a signatory of the Clean Creatives pledge.
It fits a company or nonprofit that needs a site built around an ESG or climate story. If you want a general web build or a low entry price, look elsewhere.
Core Services
- Sustainability campaigns and communications
- Website design
- Purpose-driven branding
- ESG reporting and materiality assessments
- Graphic design and eco-friendly packaging
Why They Rank #17
- Its client rating is the fifth highest on this list. It rests on a deeper review pool than any agency ranked near it.
- Web design is a small part of what R&G sells, among the lowest focus here. It is a sustainability agency that also builds sites.
- Its entry price is the highest on this list, tied with Takt, and its hourly rate is top-tier. That makes it one of the hardest to afford here.
- Low traffic and a shorter history sit in the bottom half of this list. They keep it last despite strong reviews.
- Strong client feedback, held back by high prices and a narrow web design focus.
Snapshot of Client Reviews
Shared values come up more than usual here, especially among sustainability and climate clients. Timeliness and flexibility back that up. Criticism is minor. One nonprofit wanted a clearer split between must-have and future items, and another client wanted previews before decisions.
Our Take
Choose R&G if you need a website tied to a sustainability, ESG, or impact story. You also need a funded budget. Skip it for a standard business site or a tight budget.
Disclosure: Our recommendations include both locally headquartered agencies and offshore firms that provide services in this region. Some agencies featured do not maintain a physical office here but have an established track record of delivering services to clients in the area.
How to Pick a Web Design Agency That Fits Your Business
After scoring 17 agencies, I found six checks that matter most. Use them to narrow your list before you ask for quotes.
1. Review the Portfolio for Projects Like Yours
Open the live sites, not just the screenshots. Check that each one loads fast and works on a phone. Look for UI/UX Design that makes the next step obvious. Then match the projects to yours.
2. Compare Pricing in Writing
Halifax quotes run from monthly fees to five-figure minimums. That makes two prices hard to compare.
Ask each agency to list what its price covers, including hosting and upkeep. On Clutch, minimums often start between $5,000 and $25,000. For wider benchmarks, see our website design cost data.
3. Test Their SEO Skills
A good site still needs to be found. Ask how the agency handles SEO from the start, from page structure to speed.
Many buyers search with Dartmouth, Bedford, or Nova Scotia added, so ask how they cover those terms. Platform shapes search too, so compare WordPress web design agencies.
4. Judge Communication Early
Notice how fast and how clearly they reply before you sign. Ask who your day-to-day contact will be. Check how they share progress, whether by weekly calls or a shared board. Clear habits now save stress later.
5. Plan for Growth
Your site should still fit in two years. Ask how the agency handles new pages, new tools, and more traffic. Startups and scale-ups here often outgrow simple builds fast. Good web design services plan for that growth from day one. Pick a partner who can grow with you.
6. Weigh Local Knowledge Against Remote Skill
A local team can help with in-person workshops and market feel. A remote team can match that skill, but expect a gap of several hours in time zones. Many remote options are web design agencies across Canada. Ask when they take calls and how fast they answer.
What Can Go Wrong When Hiring a Web Design Agency
Most bad projects start with a few predictable slips. Spot them early, and you can avoid the ones that cost the most.
1. Choosing on Price Alone
Many buyers search for prices first, then pick the lowest number. That number often leaves out hosting, domains, and upkeep. Those costs show up late. Use a cost calculator to compare the full picture.
2. Adding SEO After Launch
A common SEO mistake is leaving it until after launch, which means rebuilding pages. Ask about page structure and speed before design starts. People also search by platform, like WordPress or Shopify, so the build shapes how they find you.
3. Skipping the Portfolio Review
A polished homepage doesn’t prove an agency can do your kind of project. More shoppers expect to buy online, so test checkout and forms in past work. Check page speed too. Then ask for a client you can contact.
4. Trusting Star Ratings Alone
A high star rating can hide a poor fit or old feedback. Check the dates and what the project involved. Then compare with Google reviews, where the number of reviews gives a fuller view.
5. Overlooking Mobile
Many visitors open your site on a phone first. Test the agency’s own sites on one. Check menus, buttons, and load time. Then ask how they test across devices.
6. Ignoring Ownership and Handover Terms
Some contracts leave the agency in control of your files or domain. Ask who owns the code, content, and accounts. Get the handover terms in writing before work starts. You should be able to leave without a fight.
7. Having No Support Plan
A site needs updates, backups, and fixes after launch. Many agencies offer website maintenance plans alongside the build. Ask what support costs and how fast they reply. Without a plan, you pay in a panic later.
8. Trusting Any List Without Checking Who Wrote It
Directories and roundups fill the first page of results, and many rank their own publisher. Check who wrote a list and how it scores. Look for one method applied to every agency. Then verify any pick yourself.
Ready to Choose a Web Design Agency?
A good web design agency choice starts with fit, not rank. The top spots reward scale, reviews, and value, but your project decides who is right. A home service business, a Shopify store, and a nonprofit brand need very different partners.
Use the profiles to build a short list. Compare what each quote covers, ask about handover and support, and check recent work.
Halifax’s ocean and defence suppliers often need credible business-to-business sites. If that is you, look for proof of that work.
We built this ranking to make that first cut easier. If you want a wider view, browse our full list of web design agencies. Take your short list, book a few calls, and ask for written scopes before you decide.
What Goes Into Our Agency Scores
Why This Ranking Is Different
Most agency roundups lean on editor opinion, self-reported claims, or paid placement. This ranking works differently. It uses one repeatable scoring framework, applied the same way to every agency.
I call these companies web design agencies serving Halifax, because the list mixes local, national, and offshore firms. Location is not a ranking factor. No agency earns extra points for being local, and none paid for a spot or a higher position.
Scored metrics and qualitative research play different roles. I read service pages, portfolios, case studies, clients, awards, and certifications to write each profile. They add or remove no points unless they match a weighted metric below.
Where Your Data Comes From
We collected the data independently during 2026. Each source covers one part of the picture, so no single site decides a score.
Monthly website traffic comes from SEMrush, and it is an estimate. I treat it as a comparison signal, not an exact count.
Client ratings and review counts come from Clutch, DesignRush, G2, Google Business Profile, and Trustpilot. Employee ratings and review volume come from Glassdoor and Indeed. Team size comes from LinkedIn.
Agency websites and other public sources supply services, pricing, hourly rates, minimum project size, and business history.
I also reviewed service pages, portfolios, case studies, public client examples, awards, and partnerships. This confirmed each agency’s web design work and added context for the profiles.
Unless represented by one of the weighted metrics below, these qualitative findings do not affect the numerical score.
The Five Dimensions That Shape Your Rankings
Each agency is scored across five weighted areas. Positive categories add points, while pricing metrics deduct points for higher cost barriers.
1. Web Design Focus & Value Assessment (20%)
This category measures how central web design is to the agency’s offering. It also shows how clients rate the value they received for the cost.
| Metric | Weight | How We Calculated It |
| Web Design Focus | 10% | Web design appeared as a core agency service |
| Client Rating for Cost | 10% | Average cost/value rating from selected review platforms |
Agencies gain when web design is a core part of their business. Clients must also report strong value for money.
2. Brand Authority (45%)
This category measures visibility, scale, and operating history.
| Metric | Weight | How We Calculated It |
| Website Traffic | 20% | Higher estimated SEMrush traffic contributed more points |
| LinkedIn Team Size | 15% | Larger teams contributed more points |
| Years in Business | 10% | Longer operating histories contributed more points |
These metrics are comparative signals of market presence, delivery capacity, and operating stability. A bigger agency is not automatically a better one.
3. Client Satisfaction (30%)
This category combines rating quality with review volume.
| Metric | Weight | How We Calculated It |
| Average Client Rating | 15% | Combined ratings from selected review platforms |
| Total Client Reviews | 15% | Greater review volume contributed more confidence to the score |
A high rating backed by many reviews carries more weight than one backed by few.
4. Employee Satisfaction (25%)
Employee sentiment gives an extra signal about how stable an organization is.
| Metric | Weight | How We Calculated It |
| Average Employee Rating | 10% | Average rating from Glassdoor and Indeed |
| Number of Employee Reviews | 15% | Greater review volume reduced the influence of very small samples |
Both the rating and the number of reviews matter. A small sample can swing an average, so more reviews reduce that effect.
5. Cost Accessibility Adjustment (-20%)
This is the only category that subtracts points.
| Metric | Weight | How We Calculated It |
| Hourly Rate | -10% | Higher hourly rates received larger deductions |
| Minimum Project Cost | -10% | Higher entry costs reduced accessibility scores |
A high price does not mean worse work. This adjustment only reflects how accessible each agency is across a wider range of budgets.
How the Final Score Works
Each metric is normalized, weighted, and combined into a score out of 100.
Positive metrics contribute up to 120 points. The Cost Accessibility Adjustment can deduct up to 20 points, based on hourly rate and minimum project cost.
No single metric decides a ranking. Larger agencies may gain from traffic, team size, or longevity. Smaller agencies may do well on client satisfaction, employee sentiment, web design focus, value, or affordability.
Only the weighted metrics change rankings. Awards, clients, partnerships, certifications, case studies, portfolio quality, and local presence can appear in profiles. They never change their score.
This framework lets us compare agencies of different sizes, pricing models, and market positions on equal terms.
Disclosure: All rankings and scores are based solely on publicly available data collected at the time of publication. These rankings reflect the market landscape at the time of publication. Although individual metrics may change over time, the evaluation framework prioritizes long-term capability signals, making major ranking fluctuations unlikely.
